Re: Bird Flu in France?

Perhaps any birds found with the flu will be placed in a field close to Calais, with no obvious security......

Er ..

The virus - that jumps from birds to humans - has killed at least 79 people in east Asia and Turkey since 2003.
Am I missing something here? 79 people? Even if that was in 6 months it'd still be a utterly paltry (poultry? ) amount, haven't more people died from being struck by lightning or something?

I've puzzled about this as well.I also was confused when CJD was described as an epidemic. If these two are epidemics then what standing does that put AIDS on?

Re: Bird Flu in France?

Known and therefore uninteresting I think. The mass media doesn't have to be factually correct, as long as it makes people cack themselves

A pandemic.Which of course is the worry the further this travels the more likely it is to find an airbourne virus that will mutate it into something that will grow to pandemic proportions

The worry is that each time it passes to humans it could be the start of a faster spread

Re: Bird Flu in France?

I believe that Bifta's question deserves an answer. What is an epidemic and what is a pandemic and what are they in relationship to an outbreak?

I also want to know is AIDS an epidemic or a pandemic?

Bird flu is neither yet- as it affects humans but there is no human-human transmission so far.

from pandemic link

HIV - the virus that causes AIDS - can be considered a global pandemic but it is currently most extensive in southern and eastern Africa. It is restricted to a small proportion of the population in other countries, and is only spreading slowly in those countries. If there were to be a true destruction-of-life pandemic it would be likely to be similar to HIV, i.e. a constantly evolving disease.
