Re: [MERGED] Mark Oaten......
But if a politician can have an affair and betray his wife and family, what sort of a political leader would he make?

Well, Paddy Ashdown's just coming to the end of ten years as the de facto King of Bosnia, so he didn't do too badly out of dropping his trousers. John Major made a pretty poor Prime Minister but (railways apart) didn't do too much damage, and he'd been tupping Edwina. Profumo, by all accounts, was an extremely nice chap. Cecil Parkinson's a complete sod. Not much of a conclusion to be drawn from those.
On the other hand, Tony Blair has had not a hint of impropriety in his career and has made the biggest foreign policy mistake in postwar history plus massively contributing to the erosion of democracy and centralisation of executive power. Possibly some extra-marital executive relief might help him understand that there are human beings outside the Downing Street Policy Unit.

In one line: the "morality of your sex" life it's irrelevant to your job performance.

Re: [MERGED] Mark Oaten......
Quite, I don't see how it's any different from any other element of your extra-political life - don't say one thing in public and another in private. if you've got shares in a DNA testing company, don't use your position in Government to expand DNA testing (yes, you, Big Dave Blunkett). If you like a bit of man-on-man action, don't stand up in Parliament and denounce homosexuality as a sin (countless examples, usually Tory). If you like prostitutes, don't try and have it criminalised. It's called hypocrisy.
In this case I believe Oaten spoke a couple of days before the manure hit the rotary ventilator arguing (as a Liberal, of course) for a more tolerant attitude to prostitution. Not particularly hypocritical, really.
