Re: Whale swims up Thames

This is an interesting story.
I hope the whale gets out ok and makes it back out to sea.
It shows something must have definately changed in the water to atttract it up the Thames.
Whales are cool. I used to collect these sea and oceans fact file cards and always used to like the whale ones.
Now the current has turned it should hopefully head out.

Re: Whale swims up Thames

There is a serious rescue operation underway:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/4633878.stm
http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0...496367,00.html

Looks like they intend to capture it and put it on a lorry

Meanwhile Battersea bridge, only just reopened following repairs after a barge crashed into it, is now closed due to sightseers

How much is all of this costing???

I can see us spending an amazing amount on this rescue, then it being hit by a boat as it swims to freedom, or w/e.

(P.s. this made sense to me when I typed it :\)

Re: Whale swims up Thames

I'd suspect a lot of the actual rescue bit is being done by charitable organisations - RSPCA, and The British Divers Marine Life Rescue. Only implication for the public purse will be policing time for all the sightseers and the like.

Re: Whale swims up Thames

The cost will be picked up by one of the countries in the UK. Its not England, N Ireland or Scotland's turn this time though.....

Let's all hope that it doesn't end up being saved from one death only to find itself harpooned by those lovely Norweigans

Well it's coming up to the Dome now - by the time it gets to where I could see it, the viewing area will be closed! Never mind - BBC News 24 seems to be doing a good job so far!

Indeed you are correct But it's not a Bus and i doubt the Whale would have sufficient funds for either. You can stop being silly as well

Could go down the road that is straight opposite you as you reach the little roundabout and then climb over the little gate that stops people taking bikes in late at night lol.
BBC stream is not working here, site must be swamped

Me? Climb?? No thanks, I'll stay and watch the BBC!
Mind you, all the 'experts' seem to be doing is disagreeing with each other at the moment! I might see if the coverage is any better on Sky.

Oh well - latest from the BBC news channel is that the whale's condition has worsened, but they are continuing with the effort to get it back out to see. Hope all goes well for it.
And they have now apparently cancelled the request for an ocean-going boat to take the whale further out to sea. Time will tell I suppose.
