I've been humming 'Ride, Sally, Ride!' all morning. Funny you don't know who these people are until they're gone.

Re: R.I.P Wilson Pickett

You do if you watched 'The Commitments', which he 'appears' in.

I grew up with my dad playing 'In The Midnight Hour' on the piano - it's one of his favourite songs. Sad to see him go (Wilson Pickett, not my old man).

Re: R.I.P Wilson Pickett

One of my early music heroes.

Saw him at a Stax concert @ the Manchester Apollo way back. I think he also visted the Twisted Wheel in Manchester when I was a regular there.

This was back in the late '60s so my memory ain't what it should be !!

You hear his (and many other soul* singers) music influence cropping up everywhere nowadays.

*Soul then was nothing like it is today.

This is what I mean - I was familiar with 'Midnight Hour' and 'Ride Sally Ride', but I couldn't have told you who recorded them. They were just the sort of song that's part of the fabric of life, you just know them.

And, while I'm no expert on the genre, I agree with you. When you compare 'Soul (original)' with 'Soul (modern)', give me the original any day.

Re: R.I.P Wilson Pickett

I can hear the baritone sax in 'Midnight Hour', playing in my head, now.

RIP Wilson, you were a credit to the genre.

We have a local group called the Rumble Band, about 12 piece IIRC, who do a set comprised only (solely ? ) of 'proper' Soul music - and like Chris says, you might not know who did each song, but you find yourself knowing all the lyrics.

- nostalgia isn't what it used to be....

Oh the nostalgia ! I'm a bit of a soul music snob, being brought up on it at The 'Wheel'. See this write up and see if the oldies amongst you recall any of the bands mentioned.

Graham Bond! That's going back a bit. Mind you, he used to be a bebopper before he turned to R&B - not 1/2 bad, either. Was playing alto back then, of course...

And great shame about Wilson Pickett. For me, him and Otis were the two _great_ soul singers of the 60s.
