Are you still browsing Cable Forum?
http://www.breakingnews.ie/2006/01/09/story238733.html
This story has made me wonder how many people who browse this board are actually dead. Hands up please...how many of you are dead?

Re: Are you still browsing Cable Forum?
I wondered how many people just disappear off the internet after they are dead? Obviosuly all them. but i mean how would people know?
Blogs would not be updated, accounts will just never be updated, and if they run a site it will just go without people knowing what happened. Odd thought

Richard M has already thought of this. He wrote a script that if he doesn't log on to his computer at least once every week, it automatically sounds emails out to everyone on his address book, and the authorities that he is dead, or they should check up on him

What a brilliant idea! But how is it done, Richard M? I can't script but my daughter can.

A week? What if the computer breaks? How does the script run if the computers off? Or is it on sleep?

Doesn't have to be his computer. It can be any he is using.
There are many ways of doing it, here is one. Have a page on his linux website (that's private) that logs the time and date when its loaded in a MySql DB. Every day, a cronjob (a linux scheduler) runs a script to check the last date logged. if its more than a week old, it assumes Richard has died. What happens is his homepage on his browsrt points to that page, and then after logging the date/time, forwards onto his chosen front page.
If his computer died, he could go around to his mate's house and visit the page there. Or from work.

I'm dead. It's my auto response bot thingy that I've made - that passed the Turing test - that keeps my forum posts up.
I'd tell you the secrets. But I'm dead so I can't.

There's more life in your average dodo than in me.

Every 108 minutes he needs to type a series of numbers into his computer, an alarm sounds to remind him, if he does not the consequences are listed above.
