Guy Fawkes Plot
Sitting listening to the crack and pop of the traditional form of celebrating November the 5th or Guy Fawkes night, I’m wondering just what we are now celebrating. After all we are now a multicultural, multifaith country in which we are now free to follow any religion or faith of our own choice. Why are we still celebrating an incident where some Catholics felt so incensed that they were forced into a plot to do away with the government and judiciary of the day?Why are we celebrating a time when torture and evisceration were a mainstay of the law?
So the question is does Guy Fawkes Night still have any relevance to us 4 centuries later.Should we in the 21st century be abandoning this ‘festival’
THIS IS NOT A BANNING OF FIREWORKS ISSUE.

Re: Guy Fawkes Plot
It's a tradition, just like Easter, May Day, Christmas and probably many other things we "celebrate" - is the origin that important ?

Re: Guy Fawkes Plot
At least there are fewer bonfires these days and I haven't seen a Guy on top of one for years!

I doubt most of them care, I've never heard any complain.

It's one of the few things around that actually get kids interested in history! Tell them about how someone tried to blow up a load of politicians - and very nearly succeeded - and strangely enough they're interested!

I'm sure you have. I'm not really sure what your point is tbh, you will always find someone to moan about something. I'm sure plenty of people moan about Christmas. It's a traditional celebration and should stay as it is, there is already enough pc inteference with our way of life, no more is needed.

Being RC myself, not really gave it much thought until now. I don't think it causes any offence really, unlike say, Orange Parades like they have in Northern Ireland if you want to look at the historical side of things. Just pure religious hatred as far as I can see. Bonfire night in the UK is just for fun, regardless of which faith you are.
Voted for the option 'Leave it as it is' by the way.

Yep the initial plotter were. However the whole incident did lead to wholesale arrest and killing of what were innocent catholics who had nothing to do with the plot.It also led to a crackdown on catholics in general.I'm wondering if celebrating the deaths by torture of those whom were innocent of anything but the method in which they worshipped is something that a society in the 21st century should still be doing.
Bit like should they still be having Orange Parades in NI?Because Catholics find those offensive.
