Christmas gets Banned

According to the BBC Christmas lights have been banned in Lamberth and are called Winter Lights or Celebrity Lights so as not to offend anyone

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/4398680.stm

Must admit that this has got me very annoyed and is PC going over the top.. Although the story says this was only someone juniour who came up with this the very fact that we have people who think like this in the UK is very worrying

Our head of state, The Queen, is also head of the Church of England which, as far as i know, is still the official religion in England. That religion celebrates Christmas and I can't think how anyone could be offended by Christmas. unless they were an athiest and even then I doubt Christmas would really offend them.

I could understand it if we had a tradition of called black people by a word being with n people saying this tradition is wrong and needs to be stopped.. but celebrating Christmas or any of our other traditions shouldn't be banned or stopped in any way

at the moment we are so worried about upsetting minorities but no one cares if they upset us or don't integrate into British society..

i like to have a bacon sandwich on a Saturday afternoon but according to Islam a pig is a dirty creature and bacon shouldn't be eaten.. i find this offensive to me but does anyone care about the minorities upsetting the rest of the nation

We look as if we are heading down the American road in regards to faiths etc. How long will it be before no religion is allowed in schools, government buildings ?
Speaking just for myself, I cherish our values, our once tolerent attitudes that respected the fact that everyone is different, but if you're from overseas, you respect the majority values of where you're living now, and the majority shouldn't have to change to suit you

That's just not on. Why do the rest of us have to abandon all OUR signs and symbols of our religion, yet every other religion gets to make a point of showing off theirs?

And further more, we now often see Ramadan or Diwali mentioned - I suggest those ought to be re-named so as to be more 'inclusive'.

It's an insult to Christians to take these liberties - I hope the 'Council of British Christians'/'Christian Forum of Britain' (of course, we don't have either of those...) make lots of big waves.

Fine by me - as long as it applies to ALL equally.

Re: Christmas gets Banned

This is one of those stories that the press love to grab on to and run away with. Read further and you find that it was a mistake. A decision that was taken at a junior level within the council without approval.

Quote same BBC article:- She said: "It was a junior-level decision and it happened to go into print which was an error basically.
"I think it was certainly not a council policy that we should call the lights winter lights."

Having said that though it does still show that there is a mindset within the local council that thinks the word "christmas" is offensive.

I can vouch for that. The word Christmas is practically banned. You can't wish another christian "Happy christmas", it has to be "happy holidays". Likewise, gone are christmas trees, and lights. They are now called "holiday trees" and "holiday lights". And look at the furore caused trying to get the 10 commandments taking out of a courthouse in Alabama.

Re: Christmas gets Banned

I seem to recall something like this last year - a newspaper falsely claiming that father christmas couldnt go on the town hall because it was offensive.

I've never come across anyone offended by Christmas - only those who dont like it - maybe the media want us to turn against each other like in Birmingham?

Makes for good news....

Edit: The BBC site said that it was an error made by Junior officials, and not council policy.

Re: Christmas gets Banned

So Christmas isn't banned then?

It's up to people what they celebrate and how but what offends me is Christmas being used as an excuse for abject commercialism and having it shoved down my throat, then any objections that I raise being shouted down with cries of 'Scrooge'. Christmas lights are pretty though (though a tremendous waste of energy )

Re: Christmas gets Banned

Its another name for Diwali one of the main Hindu religious festivals.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divali

Still if some Hindus are offended by pictures of them looking at Jesus I can't see them being happy about having their festival name hijacked to cover Christmas

Re: Christmas gets Banned

I know it is... Maybe the Jews use that term because the Nazi's created it?

Kinda like how we invented the Yankee Doodle Dandy song to antagonise American troops in the Revolutionary war, and they started singing it to antagonise us.
