Marine Lt Col Andy Price, of Fleet Command in Portsmouth, said: "This type of shooting is unparalleled. It's the ultimate professional shot.

"To hit that small target in rough seas from a moving platform and miss everyone else on the boat is formidable. These guys are highly trained and we are very proud of what they have done."
Good shooting

Must have been a pretty excellent helicopter pilot, as well.

Re: Stop or I'll shoot

The thread on pprune is interesting for the informed guesses about just how big a gun they were using out of the back of the helicopter. It's still a drop in the ocean, though.

Re: Stop or I'll shoot

That is excellent shooting!

Of course had it been the Yanks they'd have done something real subtle like hit the boat with a missile.

This story reminds me of another piece of great shooting:

Gunnery Sgt. Carlos M. Hathcock was a US Marine Corps Master Sniper who was known to the Vietnamese as "White Feather".

He served in Vietnam and became famous for his skill. His longest kill recorded was from a distance of 2543 yards. To put it in perpective, that is nearly 1.5 miles away.

He was also a very brave man who saved the lives of a number of fellow marines when the vehicle he was riding on blew up in an ambush, pulling them from the vehicle, and suffering terrible burns himself.

Rather surprisingly, it's possible the technique was developed by the USCG - it makes sense after all. You might want to talk to these chaps afterwards.

Well done to them guys, I wouldn't like to be running away from the Royal Navy with that sharpshooter on board.
