Is George Bush thick or what?

Going back to a thread a few weeks ago, a rather odd thing has happened in Washington - Bush's nominee for the vacant seat on the Supreme Court (who happens to be his lawyer) has withdrawn. Apparently, she didn't want to reveal confidential White House documents. To the Senate. In part of a hearing that they must have known she was going to go through.

So, er, who didn't check the process out before nominating her, then, or is it a convenient excuse to get out of what was becoming an increasing embarrassment? Either way, the question of quite how bright and clued up Bush is still hangs unanswered...

Not everything is a conspiracy. I don't suppose you'd like to show me your bank statements. If the senators are really that bothered they could put in a sopoena to a judge, and let a judge decide wether it is a conspiracy, or wait until the FOIA comes into effect.

The humour and irony here is that in order to retreat from an untenable position of nominating someone unqualified (and, importantly, unsupported by Bush's core support) without the White House looking like it's retreating, the spin line is that there is a conspiracy to keep Senators in the dark, rather than a cockup. This makes the Senators look like the bad guys for asking nosy questions. Some of the headlines on US and Canadian sites make this rather obvious:

Those are in the minority, however.
