Voices
...no, not the sort floating round the head...The BBC are having a major project into accents, dialect, words etc etc... very interesting site...
www.bbc.co.uk/voices
The BBC first thought that the regional accents would die out when they first started broadcasting telly all those years ago. They thought that the "Queen's English" when heard all the time would dilute the regional dialects.....How wrong they were.
So, complete the quick poll above and add any thoughts you have on accents, dialect & word that mean the same thing.
Also as a quick survey how do you pronounce "Scone"?
Do you say a) Scoh-ne or b) Skon
(Hopefully that translates well in text??)
Have a go at this quiz by the way....

Re: Voices
I've always pronounced it Scoh-ne (at least according to the way you typed it )
As for the poll, I've only ever called it an alley. However, where I grew up (Walsall, and then just outside Birmingham), we always used 'gully' to describe a path that connected one estate to another - normally, some sort of walkway that wasn't identified on a map.
EDIT:Actually, we have an alley that runs along the back of our house, and I can't help but snigger whenever one of the neighbours refers to it as the 'back passage' . Childish I know, but still funny

Re: Voices
I say Skon.
And I call it an alleyway, suppose if I had to pick another it would be entry.

Re: Voices
Entry when I was growing up (because my grandparents had one and that's what my mum called it), 'lane' these days because my in-laws have one and that's what Mrs T calls it!

Your phonetic renderings are a little skewed ... (a) reads with a vocalised 'e' that way.
I think you mean:
a) Scone with an elongated 'o' as in 'phone'
b) Scone with a short 'o' as in 'pot'
in which case, it's (b) for me.

Re: Voices
Just to avoid confusion about the alleyway, what I am talking about is a narrow "passage" that goes between two houses as opposed to the "side of the house" or path, sidewalk etc...
See enclosed picture....its not the best as most of them are edged by fences or hedges....

Well, that's a different kettle of fish entirely.
I thought you were talking about a lane between the backs of houses, possibly cobbled, where children, stray dogs and fly tippers roam.

Re: Voices
I picked 'ginnel' as that's the one I'd use most likely (having lived for quite some time in Yorkshire), although I might also use 'snicket'. Someone told me about 'twitten' recently, think that's a south coast thing.

Ah well, we didn't have any then - where I grew up, all of the houses were either semi- or detached
