PCS staff to strike on eve of games
Unbelievable, after a vote with 57% in favour from a 20% turnout.
Mark Serwotka's an idiot...

He is also intent on agitating as much as possible for political reasons. If the 89% of PCS staff who did not vote for this strike allow themselves to be used as pawns in his game, well that will be disappointing.

Personally out of 100% of the staff 60 - 70 % should agree, those who don't vote are automatically counted as being against.

Re: PCS staff to strike on eve of games
Just enjoyed watching Gavin Essler giving some pig-headed PCS union rep a good kicking on Newsnight. Said rep's attempts to justify holding the strike on the eve of the Olympics, rather than any other time during the 18 months this dispute has apparently been going on, were lame in the extreme.

I've had this discussion on here before about whether this constitutes a mandate for industrial action ,i know that technically it is but the turnout being as low as it was i don't consider it to be one

Re: PCS staff to strike on eve of games
I personally think it's a good thing. people are making a stand against the government on this.
they have had enough of these cuts with their pensions and everything. whilst millions are being spent and wasted everywhere else.
if they left it till after the olympics then they'd just be ignored. as it is now they'll be heard before the day of the strike comes.
welcome to the new 'not going to put with this crap anymore Britain'

There won't be no turnout. I heard they'll be not going into work and staying at home sorting out the shed or something that needs doing.

It's about as much of a mandate as Dave's got to run the country, it's democracy if 11% turnout is good enough to return an MP for Harlow they should get their own house in order before lecturing unions on theirs imo.

No Gary ,people are most definitely not making a stand .A very small % of the population are making a stand .Something i feel very strong about is voting (or spoiling the paper) simply not voting ,as is becoming increasingly common, just gives politicians and union leaders more power with no real mandate imo

Re: PCS staff to strike on eve of games
Why can they not be sacked on some trumped up excuse, below par performance for example? Then the bloodthirsty lawyers can have a field day.

Re: PCS staff to strike on eve of games
11% of the members voted for a strike sorry when did that become a good enough amount to call a strike and how many members will actually go on strike that day. Country is in the toilet and yet there is an increasing number within the trade union movement that feel this is the time to start trouble well good luck to them because i think it will kill them off for good in their present incarnation which is a bunch at the top of most unions that are every bit as out of touch with the ordinary people in this country as our government. I have nothing against the principle of unions but i do object too the one's we have in this country who no longer really give a stuff about their members and are far more interested in their own ego's and proving points many of their own members don't care about.

At present, it's good enough because them's the rules. But Serwotka and his militant chums will be grinning on the other side of their faces when they realise they've just given the government the political cover it needs to change those rules to force a quorum on strike ballots. If the trade union movement is not very careful it is going to find before long that it's very difficult indeed to get a strike approved.

Re: PCS staff to strike on eve of games
I am a member of the PCS, and l fully support any method of getting the best deal for its members.
Lets make point, so far we have had strike alerts from tube workers, bus drivers and then we had UK border controls etc, why is there a problem with the PCS doing this.
What we have to realise is that there is millions of pounds being spent on the Olympics for a tournament that will last approx 6 weeks, we have special lanes for athletes, ect while people get done for being on them
We will have members of the public being ripped off by supermarkets and shops increasing prices, we will have touts on the streets ripping people off.
And also we have a security company that will charge this country for providing guards for such a farce, that the army have got to step in to save it.
The PCS wont go ahead with it, if they did they would lose popularity, they are doing everything that everyone is trying to do, show the government that they have had enough.
Just think of the police, they have got to supply 8.000 officers per day, annual leave has been cancelled since May.
And not only that MPs will still be on holiday.
Its about time the public realised that people have to make a stand.
