You are probably right.

I was in London about a week after 7/7. And when I was on the tube there was a guy who going by his clothes, was obviously a muslim. And he had a backpack on his lap. Then I suddenly realised that myself and everyone else close by were staring at him.

I immediately felt really guilty. Especially as this guy probably felt terrible knowing that all the people staring at him probably thought he was a terrorist...poor chap.

The police really can't win can they. Slated when they do, and slated when they don't. However I do thing that they should have responded to this one. It's easy to walk off and forget a shopping bag, but not a rucksack.

As for prodding the bags. If it had contained a bomb, then don't you care about the security guard and his family?

I'm sure he was highly trained in this situation. the police wouldn't have got him to do it if they didn't think he could deal with it.

but being on the anniversary of 7/7 and in such a high profile place. you do feel a bit let down by the lack of concern.

The most likely and effective method for a terrorist to get their message across is still with a great huge honking bomb
Quite a few people died from the anthrax in letters. And there is still a threat now.

You really are very nieve if you think that Al Qaeda gon't have a lot of resources at their disposal, including scientists and high tech equipment. Just because you see pictures of them running around Afghanistan with AK47's, it doesn't mean that's all they have.

Remember the liquid bomb plot?

Yeah, I mean security guards are highly trained bomb disposal experts aren't they.

I can't believe what the police were thinking. It is quite common for the bomb squad to respond to abandoned bags or packages.

I know they take a crash course in first aid and things like that. they may include bomb disposal in with it all as well now.

It might have been when they were on their dinner hour or something.

Re: Well, it looks like the terrorists have won

I've lived and worked in London all my life as have virtually all of my family. Like them, during my fairly regular movements in/around the capital, the last thing on my mind is terrorists. Frankly I'm more concerned about being run over or the victim of street crime than being blown up, gassed, mown down in a hail of bullets or nuked by Islamic nutters (or anyone else for that matter) and even the former prospect hardly registers on my 'richter scale' of issues worth worrying about. If the chance comes for us to take a trip or two to the Olympic park during the games, we'll do so without thinking twice. Call me blase if you like...

I wouldn't call you blase. I'd just say that you have the typical British attitude.

I was in Barbados a few years ago (before 7/7), and there were an American family who I got chatting to. And he asked me what the feeling was in the UK following 9/11. To which I replied "most people don't worry too much about it, and just go on with their normal lives. If it happens it happens." to which he replied "we are all terrified in the US". So I asked him "where do you live?". "kentucky" he replied. I nearly fell off my bar stool, and said "who the #@$~ is going to bomb Kentucky, all you have is Burbon on fried chicken?".

Well 9/11 was a huge event by any country's standards. However the US had very little home grown terror alerts apart from Oklahoma by the time of 9/11 and so haven't had enough experience to become blase about terrorist threats.

Looks like these 'terrorists' have lost:

Quote:
Three men from Birmingham have appeared in court accused of plotting to attack members of the English Defence League...
...The BBC's Tom Symonds says the court heard guns, knives, machetes and a home-made explosive device were found in a car

Re: Well, it looks like the terrorists have won

I highly doubt you can successfully stop every terrorist attack anyway. Not worrying about is the only way to go lest you drive yourself insane. There are far greater things to be worried about, like Super AIDS.

Absolutely.

Best to just get on with life and not worry about it. And to let those trained to deal with these situations actually deal with them using the procedures that have been developed through many years of experience in many countries.

Sorry Damien, that rant wasn't aimed at you.
