Safety warning over Britain’s most common antidepressant

I think there are a few members on here that are prescribed these...

Quote:
A study for medical regulators found that the drugs increase the risk of heart problems which can cause sudden death.
Doctors have been told to lower the maximum dose of the UK’s most widely prescribed antidepressant, Citalopram, for all patients.
However, regulators have admitted that it is not clear whether the lower dose is safe — as this was not tested.
Although GPs were informed of the health risk when it emerged last autumn, and may have explained the matter to patients, no public warning was issued.

Re: Safety warning over Britain’s most common antidepressant

First I've heard of this warning, and I have been on and off Citalopram for the last 3 years. GP has never kept me on them longer than 3 months at a time, but am just about to finish my first month of current Citalopram prescription.

Got me worried now.

Re: Safety warning over Britain’s most common antidepressant

I'd just like to say something here.

While I don't have experience with antidepressants, I have some experience of painkillers..

What I would like to say is if anyone reads that article and thinks it is a good idea to come off these drugs immediately, talk to your GP first. Some drugs can have unexpected side effects if you come of them too quickly. Your GP should be able to advise you on these effects, and the correct procedure for coming off the drugs.

100% agree, talk to your GP first.

Many drug have side effects, but they can be better than the effect of not taking them.

Re: Safety warning over Britain’s most common antidepressant

Thank you all. I now have a wife and daughter on citalopram. Maybe I should ask my GP for some, it'll perhaps stop me being depressed about them being depressed

I've been on it for many years, and I'd rather a slight risk of cardiac problems than the hell I would go through without it.

How ironic it would be if people on these got even more depressed at hearing this news

Re: Safety warning over Britain’s most common antidepressant

My personal experience of this sort of thing is that if you are on the drug and there is adequate concern your GP will contact you or alter your repeat prescription. I used to be on a drug called rosiglitizone (probably spelt wrong ) which was identified as doing more harm then good and i was called by my GP to tell me i had been put on another drug. Never ever just cease taking prescribed meds without consulting your GP.

I suspect that happens more than we would think, not the drug itself, but people who are depressed and their knowledge of their depression makes them more depressed. Anxiety about having Anxiety and so on.

Hence the phrase "ignorance is bliss."

Totally agree small risk is nothing compared to what I could be going through without them. Been on them for 2.5 years now. Doc tried taking me off them slowly but I get really bad anxiety and low moods that he rather I stay on them.

Even a couple of days off them can severly bring back the health issue as the drug leaves the systems really quickly, where as it can take weeks for them to start having an effect when starting on them.
