Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port plant to build new Astra

Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port plant will build a new generation of Astra cars in an "historic" deal that will see it produce at least 160,000 cars a year.
|
Quote:
Production of the new Astra will begin at the Cheshire plant in 2015 and run until at least 2020. After the investment, Ellesmere Port will have the capacity to produce up to 220,000 cars annually.
Mr Aldred said Vauxhall would more than double the UK component content in the cars, spending £1bn with contractors, which he claimed would create 3,000 jobs in the supply chain.

|
As part of an agreement to invest in the factory, Vauxhall workers voted by 94% in favour of a new four-year pay and conditions deal that would enable the plant to work around the clock for 51 weeks of the year if necessary.

Some good news for a change.

Well I don't think any firm committed labourite could fault this news.Only a raving idiot would think it was bad news surely?
I certainly think it is fabulous news and I hope that there are going to be more such business plans..and that they are situated around the north east and north west.

Re: Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port plant to build new Astra
Strikes me (pardon the pun) that this has something to do with the workforce's willingness to be flexible and make reasonable concessions in order to keep their jobs when times were tougher. A victory of common sense over union dogma, which will hopefully lead to better times for both the existing workforce and new recruits. All good news.

It's makes business(and environmental) sense if a factory can operate 24/7. You need around 1/4 of the equipment, premises etc to produce the same amount of output.

Re: Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port plant to build new Astra
I remember in the seventies that the West country was swamped with midlands car workers for the whole of August. You can't run a modern industrial plant and shut it for 1 month every year when your competitors are working flatout 24/7.
All credit to the Vauxhall workers and their unions for understanding the modern world. Their reward is job security in an uncertain future.

Perhaps a Rolls Royce is more apt for a man of your standing and wealth then.

About 80 raving idiots voted against it, assuming all 2,100 staff took part in the ballot ...

I've had 2 Vauxhalls and one just recently, to call them bags of brown stuff would be kind to them.
1. Was a Vauxhall Signum 2.2 DTI, full of faults and expensive to fix, everything about it had a plethora of £££££££ signs at the end.
2. Vaxuhall Insignia, had it for 6 months from new, 5000 miles covered and in that time it needed a new clutch plus assembley, new turbo, new injectors, power steering pump and several major call backs due to brake issues. Do not buy one of these if you are over 5ft 8ins tall. I took it back to Vauxhall under SOGA.
I know have a Skoda Superb auto diesel and my my my what a breath of fresh air they are, everything about them oozes quality and the room in them is enormous in proportion to Vauxhalls efforts of a tuna can, add the 5 year unlimited mileage parts and labour guarantee to the Superb you have a cracking motor.
If the Vauxhall plant caught fire today I'd be the first one up there with a tonne of coal to keep it burning.

Why not just not buy a Vauxhall..instead of wishing bad luck on the car building community in this country. Why not be happy for a community that has been blighted by closure of the car building in their area?
