What's gone wrong in Afghanistan

On Sunday a US soldier left his barracks and went into a nearby town and shot dead 16 civilians 4 of which where under 6 yrs old.Whta started out post 9/11 as a largely justified "war against terror" appears to be rapidly turning into a out and out fiasco where the US and any allied force is looking very much like the bad guys.I woul even go as far as to say the war on terror has evolved into a war on Islam

Re: What's gone wrong in Afghanistan

Whatever good intentions we had when going into afghanistan seem to have gone and the purpose has become blurred with many seeing no real end in sight despite over ten years in theatre. As for american troops they have always trod a fine line between too much and just enough they get so pumped up in training that they can be very tunneled vision more so then troops from most other countries (exception being old soviet spetsnaz). There was clearly something very wrong with this guy and before he went off on this rampage the question for me is why wasn't this spotted and something done about it before it reached this tragic conclusion.

Well with US troops urinating on corpses ,burning the Koran and now this massacre it's hard to think otherwise .Al Qaeda seems to have been put on the side lines ,unless of course the Americans think all Muslims are members of Al Qaeda

Sadly so crazy question if he was mentaly unstable fear those british soldiers fighting out there the pay back when taliban say revenge.

I hope afghans have restraint the soldier will surely trialed when you saw what happened after the coran burnings fear the worst.

I dont want to believe motives changed as it would decend to world conflict.

I feared americans tend to have very wrong atitude look the problems in iraq when they was policing safeish sectors.

I read he was a Staff sergeant, so training was probably a fair while ago for this guy?

I think there is a fair portion of Americans that do have an atitude problem with people from other countries, allies included.. so god help you if you're seen as a legitimate enemy.

Still, we don't know if it's anything to do with overall atitudes in America, or poor training and lack of discipline in the ranks, as the majority do manage to do their jobs the best they can, and in pretty difficult circumstances too.

It does seem to me though, they really do need to psychologically evaluate their overseas killing machines a little more thoroughly, as clearly, the consequences can be quite dire when just one of them breaks their programing.

Good points someone picked up on how they pump them up in training there prog on discovery just shows how marines trained. They even nearly killed one in water test drag them down similates rough see he passed out underwater.

Called surviving the cut wednesdays on discovery channel 11pm.

The way they train may make them lean rottweiler who physically mentally focused to attack the enemy. You wonder if it trains the right type soldiers.

Indeed many behave like any other soldier agree you do wonder about psychologically evaluation of there troops.

the fact he was in charge of others too you wonder if he was fit in leadership too.

American culture could have factors to way amercans think.

It has emerged that the 38-year-old soldier had suffered a traumatic brain injury on an earlier tour in Iraq.
The army staff sergeant, who has been in the military for 11 years, was seriously injured when he was in a vehicle that rolled during a tour of duty in 2010, a US official said.
The vehicle accident was not a combat-related event.
The official revealed the soldier had trouble reintegrating following medical treatment ahead of his first tour of Afghanistan.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source said it was too early to say whether there was any link between the injury and the shooting in Afghanistan.
seriously? Do the yanks honestly expect people to believe this and even if it proves to be true how is it possible that they are allowing mentally unstable soldiers in a position of authority into such a delicate situation such as Afghanistan

I cant believe that the soldier has been removed from the country and taken back to America, he's currently being held in a prison in Kansas.. Surely he should have been handed over to the Afghanistan authorities???

He should be held in a neutral country and tried by a neutral court. There will be no chance of a unbiased trial if it was held in ether of the 2 countries involved.

Few other crimes (other than major war crimes) are held in a neutral court especially for such a low ranking individual.

Personally i think the US will find anyway they can to prevent a trial ,i wouldn't be surprised if the US issue a statement saying that he is unfit for trial due to mental health problems

The US haven't been particularly cooperative on the war crimes front.

It shouldn't be up to the USA to dictate anything.. This is extremely bad for the US and could be the catalyst for more major attacks on them and other countries

I think that's almost a certainty. It will also further sour relationships with Afghanistan.

I wonder quite what the point is in staying or for being there in the first place: The original excuse was the "War on terror" well, Bin Laden's killed but was in Pakistan, Al Queda's skidaddled to Yemen, Somalia, and any other failed state that there is that can't be bombed etc into submission, the drug trade which was the next excuse flourishes as never before. Now there are covert negociations with the Taliban to put them back in government.

As far as I can see the 404 lives (so far) of our servicemen/women spent by desk jockeys and politicians in persuit of unclear or achievable objectives has been a complete waste.

If we really wante to protect this country from terrorists then we should be looking to our own steets: The mosques and hate preachers who ferment extremeism and be much more vigilant over who is let into this country, where nationals go abroad, and kicking out the undesirables together with the still present threat from IRA splinter groups.
