Whenever there is a civil war, refuges come her because we are safe place and we are fairly tolerant (unlike the French and Germans), so we do have an interest!
The US did help rebels stop the USSR in Afghanistan, but after that they became the Taliban, it also help create the Current Islamist threat indirectly with the help of Saudi Arabia!
We might not be world policemen, but NATO’s job is to deal with major conflicts since the end of the Cold War!
