I think key meters are a rip off that mostly affect those on low incomes ie the very people that are on them by design, although the people who have key meters could get a basic bank account so they qualify for DD discounts.
My energy company tries to put the debits down really low in the summer but i phone them up and tell them to keep the debits the same each month of the year,so no large debits in the winter if people did that maybe their winter debits would not be so high.

Re: Fuel Poverty
@ mertle
Cold Weather payments are still being paid and the criteria for payment is the same as in previous years. It may be worth checking to see if the temperature has triggered any payments.
I think it is the 7 consecutive days that causes the problems.

thank you for that just check they said one due. Just checked rules are the same thanks must be late in the post.
I just thought it puzzling they usually mention it in the news if they know its going to be cold to releive pentioners fears.
Usually talk to charities like age concern and so but nothing this time around.
Funny how weaver says its going to be warmer its still bloomin cold.

indeed I dont like they change the speed and change price per unit. I watch them like a hawk when they read them to see if they change anything.
The new meters bigger worry with remote access whats stop them ripping off housolds.

Re: Fuel Poverty
Its always amazed me Mertle that a country like America with all its riches has in some areas such abject poverty that would not look out of place in a tin pot third world country and they seem to tolerate it sadly.

Re: Fuel Poverty
Here is the Link for info on whether any £25 a time Cold Weather Payments are due. You just put in your Post Code. Although its part of the Pensions system, it applies to anybody who is eligible for the CWPs.

It sickens me there is enough wealth in the world for the rich to be confortable and surplus distributed so Poverty wiped out in the world. Greed in the world means it will never happen. Politians either scared off the rich or getting back handers to cause missery and widening the wage gap.
I really fear we heading the same road too alot of the building blocks been put in place by this coalition to cause serious poverty.

joglynne put link thanks which told me mum due 1 payment but thanks nomadking.
I have wondered whether it should be scaled by how cold it is naturally you will use more energy for -10 to 15 than -3 to -4 temperatures.

I think Greece is heading for poverty due to the austerity measures which are going to cripple it for the barmy idea of keeping Greece in the Euro, and not letting it find its own way in the world.
I think Globalisation is to blame to some degree with the poor in the world having to compete with even poorer people as multi national companies move their jobs around to play one set of poor against another in a race to the bottom.
The politicians do not necessarily care from any party look at Blair raking in his millions, and Mandelson et al do they really care about people on £6.08 an hour or their millionaire freinds that give them kick backs and their from the Labour party.
Sometimes the whole world way of doing business stinks for the poor Glabalisation is just one of those things, the establishment though see no reason to change and why should they their ideas hold sway.

totally agree with every word As example cadbury was not satisfied with uk domination they wanted world issue is they trod on bigger shoes got bought out. There nohow now causing factory shuts job losses. We need to get back to where companies was happy to make profits not global domination. I too think globalism is major factor think these equity firms should be completely banned. They purpose stink make maximum profits hoover up small businesses asset strip.
I always thought austerity was going to be way to hurt poor very badly it has been proven. Your right polititians only care when its suits them no party cares about common people anymore. They all suck up to the rich who dont want to pay proper wages problem there thinking distroying governments all over the world. Who forced to bail out but now wont even do that so austerity is been shoved in.
Net result will be ble poverty the western countries ever seen. Yet its reversable the world economy can recover but nobody wants to do it.
Better wages would create more spending power net result goods bought more profits which if correctly done creates JOBS. More jobs less reliant to governments proping the system by tax relief/credit/welfare. Economy booms less poverty due to wage increases. It will take brave government to stand up and break the cycle we are seeing say no more the poor cant take it.

It should be scaled and also more flexible on who qualifies.
Of course is the same old problem, advocates of simplicity in welfare prefer black and white simple rules where you either get it all or you get nothing. Needing 7 day consecutive days is a bit of a farce.
