How else can you Yorkshiremen keep an eye on the pigeons and whippets.
I look at our place and wonder what it must have been like when there was no insulation, double glazing or droughtproofing. There's a fireplace in pretty well every room. Even then it must have been pretty grim on a windy winters day.
I guess people just dressed warmer.

Re: Fuel Poverty
We did.
I was brought up in a Glasgow tenement, heating was coal fires, thick jumpers, and hot water bottles.
No double glazing, in fact, frequently had ice on the inside of the windows*.

We were so poor that the only time we got fresh meat to eat was when our fingers and toes fell off due to the cold...

Re: Fuel Poverty
I feel that we will be facing high energy prices for a long time and we need to deal with Fuel Poverty sooner rather than later, maybe by giving Fuel Poverty payments to people who need them!

Re: Fuel Poverty
I read russia gas supplies becoming big big issue as they struggling to supply. Apparantly it likely to go up 45%
That would be massive burden on homes shove many more into fuel poverty. I bet once the suply issue eases it dont return back to its previous prices.

Government will say they cant afford too.
I think energy prices might be the worlds downfall they hold the world to ransom. Think GAS/ELECTRIC is the true gold of the world at present.

You may find this article from two months ago of interest.
Quote:
Security of supply is one of the major concerns regularly raised in connection with the use of natural gas. Gas is running out, it is said. We are forced to import more and more from faraway places of which we know little. The Russians will turn off the taps to further their evil ends.....
...In the meantime, we import plentiful gas supplies from, principally, Norway, the Netherlands and Qatar, with small amounts arriving from Belgium, Egypt, Algeria, Yemen and Nigeria. No contracts to import Russian gas to Britain have ever been signed, but if they were they would be no different to any other supplies.

Yest, but if Russia reduces it gas supply to other nations, the international price of gas will still go up!

Re: Fuel Poverty
Our council discounts insulation for everyone. £99 for loft insulation, £99 for cavity wall (+£50 if you need a vent - open fire) so for around £250 we have 27cm+ loft insulation, vent (cold air but better than CO poisoning) and cavity wall insulation.

Whilst some people do use excessive heating I think your picture is inaccurate.
There is people literally freezing, scared to turn on the heating and still cant afford their bills.
The reason is when usage is reduced, the fuel companies increase the per unit price to compensate so bills dont drop.
Also turning heating off can lead to various health issues, I currently have blood circulation issues due to this current cold weather.

How can that be? - I live in a 4 bedroom detached house, and my standing order for Gas and Electricity (dual fuel) is £137 per month.

different efficiency boilers
different heating type
different insulation
different part of country so different weather maybe
for comparison I am in a one bed flat and during the winter on average I pay about £150-250 a quarter on heating.
now if you consider what a benefit income would be for myself on benefits. If I was on benefits I would be spending about 25-30% of my income on heating.
I consider £80 a month a LOT to spend on heating. yet you consider £137 low.

Well my parents spend £180 a month on their heating and it also depends on a variety of factors like how big is your house , how well insulated is it and several other factors as well.
