Stop Nurses Being So Cruel
Says Angela Rippon in her role as vice-president of the Patients Association and gives the following examples among hundreds she has received
In one case, she claimed, they ignored pleas for help because they were too busy reading a shopping catalogue.
In another shocking example, she said a businessman was left lying in his own faeces after suffering a suspected heart attack.
Hate to say it but I've seen worse in hospitals, in fact during the last 20 years when my mothers cronic condition led me to hospital many, many times I've witnessed the sharp decline in nursing first hand from being a vocation- to a job people took pride in- to just any old job, that said there are still some really commited staff that go above and beyond but for every one of those there's another that can't be bothered.

Re: Stop Nurses Being So Cruel
When my mother was recovering from a heart attack she was kept awake at night by the constant 'click clack' of one of the nursing staff wearing boots along the corridors, as well as the sound of the loud laughter from the work station every 10 minutes or so. When my father complained the next day he was greeted by a collective eye-roll.

Re: Stop Nurses Being So Cruel
While I have no doubts there are bad nurses, as there are bad staff in any job I do feel the article paints all nurses in the same poor light.
Many nurses complain the job is no longer the profession they trained for, increasingly they're dealing with more and more paperwork, are running poorly designed wards with too few staff to the point where they're having to treble or quadruple up on patients in some cases. Bed blocking is back as social care cuts mean patients can't be discharged. All of this after being regraded and getting a £6k pay cut as a result.
Staff morale is at an all time low especially with the NHS reforms casting another shadow over their jobs.
From my own experience most nurses do a fantastic job, under extremely difficult and demoralising circumstances.

Re: Stop Nurses Being So Cruel
Of the three hospitals i use on a regular basis i have nothing but admiration for the nurses i have met in them all as they couldn't have done more if they wanted too. Whilst i have no doubt there are bad one's out there we have to be really careful they don't all feel they are being classed the same as can happen when someone does this sort of thing. It's just the same as any job really 99% good at the job do the best they can and that 1% that has such a negative impact on public perception for a profession as a whole (well apart from bankers).

My mum had the same problem. She had a few nights in hospital and the noise from the work station kept her up. If it was work related then that would be okay, but mostly it was about who the nurses had slept, or were going to sleep, with.

Re: Stop Nurses Being So Cruel
My most recent experience was in our local NHS observation ward, on a drip to combat severe dehydration and investigation into the underlying problem. Halfway through the night I awoke, soaking wet since I'd accidentally pulled the drip out. When I tried to get help, I was simply told off for leaving the side ward - nobody came to help till staff rounds the next morning. Not impressed at all.
And I could mention the lackadaisical cleaning, but let's stop here.
Compare that with the care I've had in private hospitals - chalk and cheese.
Our youngest has just told us she wants to go into nursing. Hope she can make a difference.

She'll make a difference to the people she looks after I'm sure.
Peoples responses are statistically in tune with my experiences, about half the nursing staff are still angles really decent, committed and caring people and the other half basically wastes of space, I'm sure there's plenty of reasons for it like paper work, agency staffing but the biggest I could see was just not giving a toss.

Re: Stop Nurses Being So Cruel
Of course there are some good, some bad and some inbetween - more of the former I'd like to believe. When it comes to the not-so-professional element, perhaps the care they deliver is determined, in part, by the willingness/ability of the patient to complain or make a fuss. Some of the very worst treatment I've heard of relates to the very elderly and infirm who are often alone and barely have the will to feed themselves, let alone complain.
My own experience with our youngest is that we often come across nursing staff who just totally ignore us and carry on with personal conversations etc. whilst we're standing around like lemons waiting to be dealth with. Whilst not life threatening, that sort of treatment isn't professional and doesn't inspire much confidence.

Yes it helps explain the malnutrition cases in hospitals and why doctors are prescribing water. It also reminds me of a little old dear in the bed opposite mother years ago, she blatently couldn't reach the tray so I waited for the trolley to come round and ask the inevitable "don't you fancy that" before informing them very loudly of the mistake in the hope it didn't happen again.

Re: Stop Nurses Being So Cruel
I find it's the older nurses, who have "returned to nursing" after raising a family or whatever, who seem to have the least interest in looking after their patients. And they seem to actively try to demoralise the younger ones.
The greatest angel is usually the guy who makes the tea and coffee, and delivers the meals. They all seem chirpy souls in our local hospital.

Re: Stop Nurses Being So Cruel
Apparently old age peoples homes are inhumane to
Judi Dench has lambasted ‘inhumane’ care homes, suggesting families should take in elderly relatives instead.
