Bishop of York indulges in prejudice?
I'm not religious and rarely post about it but, for someone who's been the victim of and often spoken out about the wrongs of prejudice, I find it hard to accept that John Sentamu evidently feels it's quite OK to prolong a prejudice against gay people in the matter of marriage.

I'm with David Cameron on this one and if it makes him (in the words of Mr Sentamu) a 'dictator' well better that than a bigot.

Dr Sentamu pointed out that bishops in the House of Lords did not seek to obstruct the introduction of civil partnerships between same-sex couples in 2004.
"We supported civil partnerships because we believe that friendships are good for everybody."
He said the Church also had no opposition to plans to allow civil partnership ceremonies to take place in places of worship, if agreed by the religious denomination in question.

Are those really the words of a 'bigot'?

Re: Bishop of York indulges in prejudice?
I think we shouldn't let the church dictate what is 'right and wrong' in the guise of tradition.

because in denouncing a person who is trying to give more freedom to people he is dictating who can or cannot get married ,or at least ecouraging the church to exclude a group from religious ceremony because they are gay .

He's not changing the law, he's giving his opinion. I don't see how that makes someone a dictator.

When I heard this story the other day it was reported as 'going against the bible'
then you have to think it's lucky that the bible is mostly nice things because would we have the church or somebody saying that we should hurt or even kill people because the bible says so?

Re: Bishop of York indulges in prejudice?
It would be nicer if equality in marriage was allowed, rather than civil partnership - I wonder what his view would be if mixed race couples could only have a Civil Partnership?

he's giving his opinion as the second most senior bishop which means he's giving the opinion of the church as far as i'm concerned

That isn't how it works at all. He's giving his view, he has not said he's speaking for an entire denomination however if someone wants to engineer that in to fitting their opinion of him then that's up to them.
I still don't see how he can be called a hypocrite. His church has moved (albeit slowly) to allow these ceremonies in one of their buildings and it seems they're still evolving. If he was accused of being behind the times then I might agree with that, but hypocrisy? I don't see it.

Re: Bishop of York indulges in prejudice?
gay marriage was debated on the big question this morning ,it seemed to boil down to how you interpret the Bible .
