Cancer charity loses out as bank ends credit card deal
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-16760395
Quote:
Halifax and Bank of Scotland charity credit cards will be withdrawn from the end of February.
Lloyds Banking Group which manages the card schemes says they are no longer a cost-effective way of donating to charity.
In 2009 the cards raised around £1.1m for Cancer Research UK, the NSPCC and the Scottish SPCA.

Somewhat disappointing in view of the surplus money that seems to be available for bonuses.

Don't know all the detail and I may be wrong but the quote above states it's no longer a cost effective way of donating to charity which seems to imply they'll be adopting alternative, more cost-effective, means by which to do so. If that's the case and the charities get the same (or more benefit) at less cost to Lloyds (and consequently the taxpayer) so much the better for everyone concerned.

All the hopes for an alternative system/method come from the charities.Nowhere did I read that the banks were thinking of alternatives.

Re: Cancer charity loses out as bank ends credit card deal
What the article states clearly implies that they are. If it's misworded or someone's telling porkies that would clearly be a bad thing.
Quote:
Lloyds Banking Group said it was committed to charitable giving, but the charity credit cards had had their time. In a statement the bank said: "Following a recent review, which noted the limited demand for charity cards in recent years, we have decided that we will no longer offer a charity credit card.
"It was no longer proving to be a cost-effective method of donating to charity."
|
Now they may be lying or just misleading us but on face value it seems they are simply seeking more cost effective ways of donating which IMHO is good news since the taxpayer owns so much of that bank.

Re: Cancer charity loses out as bank ends credit card deal
Just a bit of perspective: Cancer Research UK had an income of £483m last year (down from £515m the year before). This £1.1m spread over 3 charities is small fries really, and I can imagine the administration not being cheap. That's not to say it wouldn't be good if an alternative was sought: just that it isn't that big a deal in the greater scheme.

...... and the spotlight couldn't be any more focussed upon them than it is right now so if this is a sneaky way to cut charitable giving it won't be long before we find out.

Re: Cancer charity loses out as bank ends credit card deal
Thought I'd put it here rather than start a new thread.
was at a mates the other day and someone from cancer research knocked on the door. we got into a conversation starting from knowing what work they do, through to football, the area my mate lives in. the weather, and cars.
after about 25 minutes of discussing everything in life there is to discuss, he gets out a form and asks her name, confirm the postcode, her phone number. and then what day of the month she'd prefer the direct debit to come out.
the cheek of it. all that and all he wanted was money. and the way he went about it was disgusting. and he said it was tax free too as if it made a difference.
