Man beaten unconscious sees attackers walk free from court
BBC Story: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-16640881
Quote:
A man who was kicked unconscious after he intervened to stop three men vandalising bins, has spoken of his anger as his attackers were spared jail
They received non-custodial sentences despite the fact that Joseph O'Reilly spent weeks in hospital after the attack in Manchester a year ago
The pair were seen celebrating after the sentencing.

The only thing that needs changing about it all is replacing the judges that live out in the countryside in the middle of nowhere, away from it all. with some normal people who live amongst the real people.

I think there's still an appeal option?

I wouldn't hold your breath.
There's something intrinsically wrong with a system that locks up pensioners for not paying arbitrary wheelie bin fines or TX tax fines yet allows thugs to roam free on our streets to terrorise and maim innocent citizens.
The judiciary are always keen to promote their independance, IMHO that independance is in the last chance saloon with judgements like this.

That is a very acurate assessment

I don't condone violence, but I think it should be extended to members outside the family and their baseball bats too.

That just makes them worse than the morons who did the attack in the first time. Then they would end up in gaol rather than the miscreants who maybe should be.

justice and the law don't always go hand in hand though

If justice worked properly in the first place. the baseball bats wouldn't have to come out the boots of the cars.

Re: Man beaten unconscious sees attackers walk free from court
Happens all the time. The defendants are always sorry and woeful in the dock and the minute they get let off because they are starting a new job in a few days / turning their lives around / no longer associating with friends who get them into trouble / no longer taking drink and drugs / found god *delete excuses from the big bumper book of defence lawyer lies as applicable* they are laughing joking and high-fiving their mates.

Re: Man beaten unconscious sees attackers walk free from court
I don't think that finding god (or God) or other expectations of change should allow the guilty to avoid punishment unless there are other circumstances that would mean that punishment is no longer applicable. There could be reasons for changing the punishment if it can be shown that there is already a change in the behaviour or attitudes in the defendants. There could be if say they are committed to some form of "treatment" or "service" that the courts could determine as being equable to the intended punishment.
