Deaths confirmed as cruise ship runs aground off Italy
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-16558910
Quote:
At least six people are reported dead after a cruise ship carrying more than 4,000 people ran aground off Italy.
The Costa Concordia hit a sandbar on Friday evening near the island of Giglio and listed about 20 degrees, after which people tried to reach land in lifeboats or by swimming.
The last 50 people on board are being evacuated by helicopter in a "worsening" situation.
Italians, Germans, French and British were among the 3,200 passengers.
In addition, 1,000 crew were on board the vessel.
One thousand passengers were Italian, with 500 Germans and 160 French.
The Costa Concordia had sailed earlier on Friday from Civitavecchia port near Rome for a Mediterranean cruise, due to dock in Marseille after calling at ports in Sicily, Sardinia and Spain.

It's now on its side. That must be one big hole in the side.

Just seen the pix on the TV. That's one heck of a hole in the side of the ship. Calm weather, good visibility and all the modern shipping aides: I reckon somebody was napping on watch.

Your Priorites not mine.
I don't know anyone on that ship. Looking at the picture if anyone died, they probably died needlessly.
I just saw that picture of a brand new ship costing god knows how millions, and posted the first thing I thought, which was a bloody expensive mistake.
If you want your heart to bleed for the 3 unlucky souls then be my guest, but I don't know them, didn't know them, was never likely to know them and now wont ever know them.
So I don't really feel the need to be sensitive, or make that sensitivity a priority.
Cheers.

Poor people, that must've been one scary evening.
Can't believe the size of that huge rock stuck in the side of the hull

Re: Three confirmed dead as cruise ship runs aground off Italy
This might be caused by electrical failure, also what aobut the ship itself, woult it be repaired, or scraped, and another thing if it was caused by electrical failure, then what about the other 9 ships that are like this one!

The captain and first officer of a cruise liner that ran aground off the coast of Italy are being held on suspicion of multiple manslaughter and abandoning ship while passengers were still in danger

Re: Three confirmed dead as cruise ship runs aground off Italy
One has to wonder whether this will prompt a significant re-examination of the design of modern passenger ships, both cruise liners and ferries. It's clear from the simple news media photos of the vessel that there is very little of the ship hull below the waterline and that it is dwarfed by the superstructure. As a lay person it is obvious that the ship stays upright by a careful design and balance. In an accident that will be disrupted and it's clear a list could then easily develop. There are many quotes the lifeboats could not be launched due to the list. If a similar incident had happened in a more remote location, or the ship had had sufficient momentum to continue past the obstruction it hit rather than apparently falling onto and sticking to it, the useless lifeboats would have resulted in a much greater incident.
