They would have to imporve ship safety laws again, what they should do is build future ships more like the QM2!

Re: Deaths confirmed as cruise ship runs aground off Italy

In the end it could have been a lot worse.. Currently there's 6 confirmed dead with 16 still missing.

The blame game won't help the dead or missing but may go a long way to stop this happening again.

Local radio this morning was stating that the captain took the ship close to shore to show off to friends yet the major news stations are not being so specific and just quoting the owners as saying the captain deviated from an approved course.

Only time will tell..

Do tell us what design features the QM2 has over the Concorde? That would have prevented her listing like this.

QM2 was built for the Altantic, so she has a stogner hull, what I am saying is that future ships should be built stronger!

---------- Post added at 12:51 ---------- Previous post was at 12:49 ----------

All this is going to cost Carnival (Costa's owner) $95 million

All cruise liners are built for the "world" not a specific ocean or sea.

What you're saying, is making claims without knowing anything at all about the subject matter.

I agree that the design of this ship needs to be looked at.

My point was that the QM2 is stronger because it is used on the Atlantic a lot of the time!

Not true,

Concordia was designed for European cruises so wouldn't have needed to comply with the normal design process for north atlantic routes (no small icecubes floating about) A rock though is a rock and steering the ship onto such a rock probably wouldn't have mattered no matter what design the ship was.

Well seven other Costa cruise ships undertake Transatlantic sailings.

I'd be intrested to see the document that details North Atlantic cruise ship specifications v other cruise ship specifications.

Not really a major point, but I'd like to see it all the same.

Queen Mary 2 was intended primarily to cross the Atlantic Ocean, and was therefore designed differently from many other passenger ships. The ship's final cost was approximately $300,000 US per berth, nearly double that of many contemporary cruise ships. This was due to the size of the ship and her unique design, which reduced the economies of scale achieved with other Carnival ships. Costs were also increased by the high quality of materials and the fact that, having been designed as an ocean liner, she required 40% more steel than a standard cruise ship.

Apparently ,the deviation from course was traditional with liners

The investigation into the capsizing of the Costa Concordia is focusing on whether the captain steered the ship close to an Italian island as some kind of salute
Quote:

Captain Francesco Schettino is facing accusations he decided to "skim" the island of Giglio on the coast in an acknowledgement to former Costa cruises commander Mario Palombo.
Mr Palombo, who retired in 2006 due to ill health, has been quoted as saying he used to carry out the traditional sail past and is expected to be questioned by investigators.
"I would always agree it with the harbour master. I don't understand how this happened or what was going through my colleague's head," he said.

Most cruise ships these days have designs based on where they will be operating.. The concordia class is very different to the Spirit class (costa atlantic ships) and again different to their Voyager class..

I never said it's a rule book that they follow but more design proceedure.. the concordia class was designed for warm weather and mild condition with slow runs from local port to port where other ships are designed for high speed runs through colder climates so have less balcony space and sleeker/stronger hulls..

Re: Deaths confirmed as cruise ship runs aground off Italy

Although they are all "Cruise ships" these days 40+ years ago the altlantic or long distance ships would have been entitled "Ocean liners"

Getting back though to this incident I'm very surprised that this "deviation from course" was a regular event.. The ship route follows the coast so is often close to shallow water..

Looks like the captain took quite a detour towards the island, this video on the bbc website shows it's course and the deviation he took

Emergency crews are working through the night around the wreck of a stricken cruise ship, but fears are growing for the 29 people still missing.
Quote:
The missing are thought to include four crew members, as well as passengers from the US, Germany, France and Italy.

Quote:
"The captain is in a very difficult position because we are sure enough that he abandoned the ship when many passengers were still waiting to be evacuated," said prosecutor Francesco Verusio.

A transcript purportedly of conversations between the captain and the coastguard has emerged in the Italian media - apparently drawn from one of the ship's black box recorders - which appears to corroborate the claims that the captain left the ship before all the passengers escaped
Quote:
German media have reported that 12 German passengers are still missing, and US officials have appealed for information about two Americans - Jerry Heil, 69, and his wife Barbara, 70, from White Bear Lake, Minnesota.

Six Italians, two French couples and a Peruvian are also reported to be unaccounted for.
