People think that looking at death is a new thing where in all truth it's not.. Crowds gathered at gallows for hundreds of years as it was a sight to see, people went to see dogfights, bullfights, cockfights as it was the thing to do.. Some religions celebrate the dead and carry coffins through the streets as it's what they've always done..

I'm not saying it's right or wrong..instead just saying that it's gone on for hundreds of years and even in this civilised times continues...
I don't have a problem with people looking, never said I did, don't have a problem with rubber necking on the motorway either providing they don't cause jams or more accidents but some peoples behaviour near that wreck has been way ott and beyond morbid curiosity and speaking of insensitive and crass I see the liner has made public an offer to survivors, a full refund and 30% of their next cruise...

What is wrong with taking a picture of a shipwreck were around 30 have died, not something you are like to see?

Bear in mind that people go to places like Auschwitz where millions were murdered and take photos.

I think the difference is timing: Auschwitz happened decades ago, this disaster is still ready to claim more lives.

Re: Deaths confirmed as cruise ship runs aground off Italy

Ok then, how many people sat in front of the TV watching so called documentaries showing the planes crashing into the twin towers, watched the waves swamping coastal areas in Japan.. Plane crashes are dramatised for TV and there's films based on most modern catastrophes.. I wonder how long before someone is selling their scripts based on this latest disaster?

I doubt if any of the bystanders have travelled to the island just to see the ship.. It is a tourist island with many thousands of people there at any one time..

Really

"People have come from all over Italy, just for the day," said the island’s head of tourism, Samantha Brizzi. "They come with their young children as a day trip to see the wreck. I think it’s extremely bad taste."

In fact I think some one said on the radio this morning that the island had ten times more visitors than normal...

Because there's a bloody great big cruise ship on it's side.

I currently live in West Yorkshire, pretty much central in the country. If there was such a wreck on Southport or Scarborough beaches I'd go see it, and take the kids.

In fact, I did, a couple of years ago a ferry got washed up on Blackpool beach, and although I didn't make a special journey, as I was passing nearby I diverted to have a look.

Bit different from travelling the length of a country, hiring a boat and bringing a picnic...

I may well have gone to see it if I lived on that island, looking isn't the problem imo, it's how you do it.

Quote:
The Italian company that owns the capsized cruise ship Costa Concordia has offered passengers 11,000 euros (£9,000; $14,000) each in compensation.

The deal comes after negotiations between the company, Costa Cruises, and several Italian consumer groups.

The company also promised to refund medical and transport expenses, as well as the cost of the cruise.

One consumer group, Codacons, has urged passengers not to accept the offer, Reuters news agency reports
Quote:
The deal will not cover those passengers who lost loved ones or who were injured.

"This deal concerns some 3,000 passengers from 60 countries, including some 900 Italians," Adoc, one of the consumer groups that negotiated the agreement, said in a statement, AFP reports.

"We think around 85% of them will agree to this deal," it added.

On Tuesday another body was found inside the wreck of the Costa Concordia, bringing the death toll to 16. At least 16 others are missing

I would accept a full refund of the holiday + travel and ancillary costs + £10,000.

Most people didn't suffer that terribly.

Doesn't seem that bad an offer to me either, chuck in full baggage costs and your terms would be fine by me to, lets see what several of the passengers lawyers think is fair;

Six passengers who travelled on the doomed Costa Concordia cruise liner are suing the ship's owner for $460 million

Think they might be hard pushed to find a middle ground here...

Re: Deaths confirmed as cruise ship runs aground off Italy

When it comes to litigation, first offers are to be avoided IMHO. They can simply be a means by which to put pressure on claimants to settle prematurely and thereby reduce the size/scope of any resulting action. My tenuous understanding is that if the matter proceeds to court and the final award is lower than a previous offer made then the claimant can be liable for the other side's legal costs from the time that offer was made.
