When I went into town today the look on the face of shopkeepers told you everything.

Well he wouldn't say that, wouldn't he? To be honest it's vital he keeps talking it up, him saying it's all going to hell wouldn't do the market confidence good...

There is another alternative route, getting the Country producing products the rest of the World will buy.
Last year BMW sold more Rolls Royce's than ever before, Triumph Motorcycles and JCB cannot produce enough products to meet demand. Triumph now outsell Honda in the USA.
Contrary to Thatchers claim that we could not compete with low cost Countries these companies have proved that provided they invest in new technology we can compete and win orders.
In Thatcher's day we had too many manufacturing companies virtually making products by hand and trying to compete against companies abroad who had installed the new technologies. Fighting the Union's in order to keep wages down allowed companies to go on in their old ways for years until their prices and quality eventually drove them to the wall, thankfully some of those companies were bought up and invested in and are now doing very well.

Re: Signs Of UK Economy Turning Corner
You do realise that most of JCB's manufacturing is outside the UK (its largest plant is in India), RR sold just over 3.5k cars in 2011, and that Triumph build most of their bikes in their two factories in Thailand - I am not sure if we could base a resurgence in manufacturing on that basis....

JCB and Triumph are uk based so all the money come to the UK, but you are righ we need to invest in more manufacturing, we could do that by starting a development bank!

Slowcoach's point was that these companies were successfully bulk manufacturing in the UK, not that they were based in the UK.
And nowhere in my post did I state "we need to invest in more manufacturing" - your interpretation is sub-optimal.

I wasn't aware that the UK economy was purely retail nor that the faces of shopkeepers was a good guide to economic health. In my experience some are miserable as sin regardless.

Once upon a time most shopkeepers raised a smile when taking your money these days it is like a chore for some of them someone has to talk things up and thats what this is.
