Oh ok ,i just vaguely remember something about that about 15 or so years ago .
Any way ,in my opinion 101 should be the new emergency number and 999 should be the non emergency number or just scrap 999 altogether. As i'm sure most people are aware push button phones i.e mobiles do not need the key pad unlocked to dial 999 ,112 or 101 so 999 is not the best number to have as a emergency number ,it was fine for the old rotary dial (shorter distance for the dial to travel)but not so for mobiles where loose change or other objects can accidently dial the number .

If the government are going to mess about with something and confuse people then they should at least do the job properly .Having 3 identical numbers for a emergency number makes no sense at all in the modern era of mobile phones .

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7748046.stm

Hannah Foster was murdered after her 999 call was judged to be accidental and cut off. But how do police decide if an emergency call is a misdial or a desperate last plea for help?

fair enough that doesn't happen every day and is a extreme example but there are millions of accidental 999 calls every year from mobiles in hand bags and pockets ,so much that there is a "silent solution"in place where silent 999calls are routed through to Scotland yard and dealt with by a automated system

I personally believe it will deter people from calling in to report non-serious crimes (vandalism, anti-social behaviour etc). Maybe that's the idea to reduce workload?
It's 15p per call, not per minute. Who is going to be deterred by that?
