We should be trying to wean ourselves off fossil fuels, but Hydrogen is just a means of moving energy about, it does not occur in native form so it has to be made using another "clean" energy source such as solar or nuclear. You only get back what you put in in the first place minus the inefficiencies of the process.
Whether we have hydrogen fuel celled cars or battery cars we still need to get the energy from somewhere.
I do forsee a big crunch coming where the push for ever more growth (that economic Ponzi scheme) and the subsequent demand for energy exceed the ever dwindling sources of that energy. It won't be pretty.
