There were a LOT of Eastern Europeans there and whereas they were not the majority, they had the highest percentage of workers who met or exceeded their target.
It was very physically demanding work, and some locals were put off by how far they had to walk each day for a wage which was just over the national minimum. But I never saw any of the Eastern Europeans moan about their job, none were ever late for pre-shift briefings etc. I'm not saying they're better than us but from what I saw, too many Brits decided they weren't going to do the jobs, as opposed to not being able to get them.

Life is not as simple as it sounds.
A place I worked at had a lot of people working there who seemingly seemed very happy to work for low money and were content. but then I learned a few things.
1 - the majority of them worked very long hours, they werent taking home 30-40 hours of min wage they were working 80+ hours a week.
2 - Alot were working to send money back home to whatever country they came from.
3 - Although they seem like saints working for pittance without moaning, after getting to know a few of them it became obvious things like not paying for car insurance was common practice and as such living costs were artifically reduced.
4 - The ones that didnt work long hours often had a 2nd job.
It wasnt just eastern europeans, africans etc. either, a few people who were white british origin were also doing 2 jobs as well.
I wasnt but at the time I was living with my parents so the wages were enough. When I moved out and had to start paying my own way I ended up been subsidised by my friend.
Another place I worked at which was in my view well paid for my city (but below national average), a work colleague of mine who gave me a lift back every day told me he was quitting the job as he couldnt get the overtime, he said he prefers more hours even if its a lower hourly rate. So whilst it all seems like these people work for 40 hours at min wage and get by just fine it isnt all what it seems.
Of course this raises the question is it reasonable that people should have to either do 2 jobs or work 80 odd hours a week to get by.
