Kodak files for Chapter 11[Update]

Sad, but they just didn't get their act together...
Quote:
It's not what you'd call a Kodak moment: Eastman Kodak, the very image of film-based photography, is heading for the Chapter 11 knackers yard because its management, despite the most visible and public threat imaginable from digital photography, has failed to get Kodak out of the digital trap.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Kodak, a company was synonymous with photography during a good part of its 131 years of existence – it had a 90 percent share of US photo-film sales in 1976 – is preparing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy if it can't make survival cash by selling off its patent portfolio, itself a pathetic last act for the once-mighty company.

This is interesting on Forbes too...

Few companies are as iconic as Eastman Kodak, inventor of amateur photography and creator of the star product in the hit 1973 Paul Simon song “Kodachrome.” However, it was clear in the late 1980s that digital cameras were going to change photography. Kodak itself was one of the primary inventors of the core technology, but licensed it to others in order to generate cash it invested trying to defend and extend photographic film and paper sales. In my 2008 book “Create Marketplace Disruption” I highlighted Kodak as a company so locked-in to film sales that it was unwilling to even consider moving into new markets.

Gene Simmons must be looking smug. if you watched the apprentice u.s. you'll know what i mean. i can't find a link to it but he told Kodak to change a slogan or something not that it would have stopped this from happening

Re: Kodak on verge of Chapter 11

Hard to imagine where they could have gone to be honest. They tried printers, few people printed out photos. I mean if your primary business is in film and no one is using that anymore then what can you do?

Re: Kodak on verge of Chapter 11

If you read the articles, they invented the digital camera but didn't want to exploit it for fear of damaging their film interests! Crazy...

Re: Kodak on verge of Chapter 11

Hasselblad also built their fame on specialist film cameras, but firmly embraced the digital media when it came out and are STILL world leaders in high end photography.

Digital was always a death knell for traditional film, not so much at first but the writing WAS always on the wall, the problem being resolution in the early days. Kodak should have anticipated and moved with the times, to not do so in a field they knew had such possibilities was sheer folly and sadly, they are now paying the price.
