Any old iron ....show some ID
with scrap metal thefts going through the proverbial lead roof action is finally being taken .
Quote:
A pilot scheme to try to stop the theft of metal is being launched in northeast England.
Thefts of valuable metals are thought to be costing the country £1bn a year in loss and damage, as well as causing chaos on the railways.
Virgin Trains estimates that cable thefts alone were responsible for 6,000 hours of delays on the railways last year.
The Government-backed scheme relies on dealers agreeing to record the names and addresses of people selling scrap metal.

Many scrap dealers already ask for ID and proof of address but many don't .The scheme at the moment is a voluntary test scheme involving as many scrap dealers as they can get in the NEast .Scrap men will be required to prove who they are and where they live

There was also reports a month or two ago on forcing scrap merchants to only pay for metal by a traceable method (cheque/bank transfer)

Re: Any old iron ....show some ID
The onus should be squarely on the scrap metal dealers to be able to prove they received the metal from legitmate sources. If they can't the metal should be seized by HMRC and sold - proceeds going to the treasury.
Dealers should be audited quarterly at least.
It's not rocket science and should have been implemented years ago

Re: Any old iron ....show some ID
It won't stop cash payments at all. Inspections of the yards won't either, as they'll just store stuff elsewhere or send it overseas in sealed containers.

Sadly i think Taf is right whatever we do we will not stop the worst offenders from stealing cables and as with everything else i would guess the vast majority of the crime is carried out by a small number of people in organised groups rather then kids or somesuch looking for a bit of spare change.

I have no problem with a proper tradesman collecting legit scrap and trading as such. I might be envious of the X5 in the drive but if it was legitematly come by who am I to condemn.
I just want to see those scum who pinch memorial plaques and the like crucified

I'm talking about the local scrap man who's been doing it for years and earning a good living because he has never paid any tax

Yes you are right, it won't stop the worst offenders, just the same as any measures brought in to stop any crime won't. However it will make things far more difficult for the theives than they are at the moment.
