Clegg unveils £1bn scheme to help young jobless

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-15878796

Quote:
Nick Clegg will set out £1bn government plans later to create 400,000 work and training placements in Britain to help tackle record youth unemployment.
Quote:
The programme will begin next April and aim to get young people into a range of employment sectors, from the traditional, like retail and construction, to the emerging, like the green economy.

Quote:
The government says the £1bn being made available is new money, not a reallocation of existing funds.

Quote:
It insists that certain expectations will be placed on those taking part - for example, anyone who drops out of a work experience placement or subsidised job will lose their benefits.

Quote:
"There are already widespread reports of young people on the programme being exploited. Keen unemployed youngsters desperate to find work shouldn't be conscripted into edging out other workers who should have been paid the going rate for the job."

No we already tried that and it didn't work too well - 3/4ths of all 'growth' during the previous government were from expanding the public sector, the rest debt.

This couldn't hurt.

It's difficult to argue with the principle of getting young people into work

Our villages, towns and cities are full of young folk who just need a chance to get into meaningful employment, we should move heaven and earth to give them that chance

But I just hope the government do not cut elsewhere to fund it

Concentrate on Youth unemployment? It's what every government has done since the 80s.

There's already schemes to help the youth of today, it's called 'University' or 'Modern Apprenticeships'. How about the government concentrate on those middle aged unemployed who have found themselves unemployed after 10, 20, 30 years or so who may need retraining to get work?

Yes the same type schemes that exploited many younger people in the 80's and l remember my brother being exploited totally by one of his bosses for at least 1 year.

Re: Clegg unveils £1bn scheme to help young jobless

We need to increase spending on major projects, this will increase jobs

plus it is now cheaper to borrow money

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-15869094

and even then, we can raise taxes

No, i think that we sould raise taxes for high earners!

Anyway we have less public debt (in % of GDP) than Germany, Italy, France, Japan and Canada!

Mitts off my wallet, thank you, and our public debt figure is unreliable due to PFI and unfunded liabilities.

Are you sure about that - Italy's level of debt is estimated at 120% of GDP.

If you use this handy-dandy GDP% calculator from the Economist, it shows these figures
UK - 75.5%
USA - 94.4%
Germany - 84%
Italy - 119%
France - 82.3%
Japan - 220%

Where did you get your figures from, please?

btw, what's your definition of a "high earner"?
