What do you consider "Asia" to be?

I'd be interested to hear what you consider Asia to be. The reason is that I was looking for some Australian news on the bbc news site. It used to be under a category called "Asia-Pacific" but now is called just "Asia".

This is the front page for world news http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world/ and it lists Africa, Europe, Middle East etc and Asia. Included in Asia are Australia and New Zealand.

I suppose Australia and New Zealand are correctly listed as part of Asia but I don't consider them to be Asian countries in the normal sense of things.

So, what do you think? If you were looking for news about Australia or New Zealand would you automatically think "Asia"?

I would not class them as Asia.

Re: What do you consider "Asia" to be?

Yes it is?

Quote:
Australasia is a region of Oceania comprising Australia, New Zealand, the island of New Guinea, and neighbouring islands in the Pacific Ocean. The term was coined by Charles de Brosses in Histoire des navigations aux terres australes (1756). He derived it from the Latin for "south of Asia" and differentiated the area from Polynesia (to the east) and the southeast Pacific (Magellanica). It is also distinct from Micronesia (to the northeast). Australasia sits on the Indo-Australian Plate, together with India.

Part of the BBC cuts, chucking Australasia in with Asia saves a web page...

Australia and New Zealand are not part of the Asian continent, but they are part of the Pacific region and increasingly look towards Asia. We think, therefore, this is the best regional index for stories from the two countries.

Re: What do you consider "Asia" to be?

I had a massive debate once of if you class Egypt as middle-eastern or Africa. I find it it hard to classify where Asia becomes the Middle east...

Think there used to be an Asia Minor, the Middle East fell in there (probably)

*Rants* Who pays for it, should be made easier for people here to make sense of, bloody foreigners using our websites and having to have them simplified just for their benefit.

Re: What do you consider "Asia" to be?

So we have the far east and the middle east.Where is the near east?

To be honest the above is about where we are in location to them.Putting Australia and New Zealand in with Asia just underlines locality to each other.

And Egypt is just north Africa not Arabia.
