Re: Inflation down
A little good news at last, however, I can't see much scope for further falls in the price of fuel. I reckon the best we can hope for is that planned duty rises don't go ahead.

Re: Inflation down
In the New Year the effect of the VAT increase will drop out of the equation as the VAT rate will be the same for the year-on-year calculation

Maybe they will and maybe it'll make economic sense to do so. I think we've got to the point where a lot of people are finding fuel prices such that they're having to make major changes to their lifestyles and jobs. Now whilst it may be good for the planet for us all to drive less, it probably isn't good for the Chancellor so maybe he'll decide that he'll gain more by abandoning the planned rises and avoiding another major fall in fuel sales. It'd be interesting to see some official stats on the effect of duty increases on sales and overall revenue.

Re: Inflation down
I think instead of cutting the top rate of vat (50%) they should knock a few pence of fueal duty, that would mean more people and business's would have more money and be able to kick-start the economy.

l cannot see the planned duty rises not happening as they are desperate to get every penny from us as they possibly can.

Their need for money is well known as is its root cause. The question is could HMG raise more revenue by NOT increasing duty on this occasion. In better days people have paid up and not drastically altered their usage of fuel. Now I believe we're at the point where each increase results in lower fuel sales. HMG needs to know at what point does the reduction in fuel sales outweigh the increased revenue though increased duty on lower volumes?

they dont I wonder how much damage green taxes tipped the balance anyway it seemed governments thought the system could be milked more with stealth taxes.
Denmark come up with fat tax this government looking too. I think its crazy tax.
Countries desperate as more jobs losing at moment its not that bad but once the impending recession hits then jobs go in big way. Then it will implode bigtime. Surely onus now try ofset much possible even if countries lose triple X rating.
Keeping people in jobs now priotrity in my opinion as this gives them the revenue but ease burden by easing or even abolishing some taxes. Hopefully stimulating the economy put money in people pockets drive the stalled economy forward. Inturn creates jobs increases government revenues to then be able to narrow debt.
But it need all pulling together to strive to create jobs not greed. Once we do this I am sure things would recover banks should help stop being paranoid about triple X help governments by lowering interests on debt to government.
Priority to get worlds economy working how it should been not for greed. Once recovered never get in the mess again.
