epetitions - Public funding for Tottenham Hotspurs' planned redevelopment
Quote:
e-petition
No public funding for Tottenham Hotspurs' planned redevelopment
http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/14605
This petition calls on the Government to prevent any central or local public money being used to support Tottenham Hotspurs' redevelopment of its football ground. Tottenham Hotspurs is a commercial concern which receives many hundreds of £millions each year enabling its owners to purchase players for tens of £millions of pounds and pay them of £millions of pounds. None of this expenditure stays in the community. This is not a company short of money, assets or the ability to raise funds commercially. Normally when a company wishes to develop land it pays the local council to build the necessary infrastructure. Public money should not be used to support this private company nor special terms be offered. There are many better uses for public money that does not include a rarely used stadium and associated infrastructure. Support public spending on health, housing, and education for the community in Tottenham not this needless and blind free gift to a commercial company.

Tottenham apply for funds to redevelop White Hart Lane
Tottenham have applied for public funding to help resurrect the plan to redevelop their White Hart Lane home. In 2008, the Northumberland Development Project was launched by Spurs to turn the ground into a 60,000-seat stadium. However, soaring costs meant the plan, which involved building a new stadium on the current site, was shelved. "We are working hard to make the NDP scheme viable and enable us to stay in Tottenham and redevelop our existing site," said Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.
The north London club are also continuing to dispute the Olympic Park Legacy Company's decision to award West Ham the rights to move into the Olympic Stadium in east London after the 2012 Games. However, with the majority of Tottenham supporters desperate to stay in the borough of Haringey, the club have applied to the Regional Growth Fund for a grant.
"Public sector assistance for infrastructure and public realm works would enable us to deliver the project and the RGF represents the single most important route for funding," Levy continued. "Our hope must be that there is a recognition of the real need for investment in the Northumberland Park ward and that this project presents a real opportunity to deliver sustainable long-term, private sector-led regeneration."
It is hoped the grant would help create jobs and possibly fund an underground station near to the ground. Tottenham MP, David Lammy, who has campaigned to keep Spurs in Haringey, said: "I support this bid by Tottenham Hotspur, which has the opportunity to transform an entire community with the highest unemployment in London. The plan to redevelop White Hart Lane is far and away the most exciting regeneration project in London after the Olympics, and it is encouraging that it is private sector-led. This Regional Growth Fund proposal will benefit everyone in Tottenham and I urge the government to agree to Spurs' bid."

Re: epetitions - Public funding for Tottenham Hotspurs' planned redevelopment
Wasn't the reason they objected to West Ham moving into the Olympic stadium because public money was being used by Newham council, I'll sign it and it'll be going on NEW 606 when I get up for everyone there to sign to with a bit of luck.

Re: epetitions - Public funding for Tottenham Hotspurs' planned redevelopment
Wow when did we start supporting football clubs that can afford to pay multi-million pound salaries but evidently can't afford business as usual refurbishments and are unable to raise finance or save for new stadiums?

Look what else has come to light
A man has been arrested over claims that London 2012 executives were put under surveillance by a potential tenant of the Olympic Stadium.
Tottenham Hotspur FC monitored all 14 board members of the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC), according to the OPLC's Chair, Baroness Ford.
