Church clears the way for celibate gay bishops

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13831162

Quote:
The Church of England is expected to confirm that openly gay clergy can be made bishops, if they are celibate.
Legal advice is due to be published as early as Monday saying homosexual clergy in civil partnerships can become bishops.
The move is in response to the Equality Act, which protects from discrimination on the grounds of sexuality.
Hmm!
Are heterosexual Bishops supposed to be celibate?Hardly seems fair or equal if they are not?

It's ok as long as they don't have sex with a man.

he won't tell if you don't tell.

it's the bitching that will catch somebody out though.

That doesn't make any sense to me ,if a clergy member is in a civil partnership with a partner and stays celibate within that partnership then he can be a bishop ? not fair at all on the partner and defeats the object of being in a partnership to me

Re: Church clears the way for celibate gay bishops

Why don't they just say it. we'll abide by the law with the bare minimum. but if I hear that you've had gay sex. you're out! ?

if only God would step in.

Naturally it seems not to you - this is in many ways a post-Christian society; general morality is no longer drawn from the Christian Bible. There are bound to be things the church says and does that seem at odds with how you think society should operate.

Surely this isn't news to you though?

That's exactly why I can't get on with religion, OP.
So I'll do my own stuff.

I thought the non celibacy thing was what the C of E thought was what made it's clergy different from the Church of Rome?I thought it was rather a good selling point myself.

Anyway I can't see it working and I can't see the gay C of E members accepting it.They will be pressing for gay Bishops and no strings attached and it will happen eventually.

Re: Church clears the way for celibate gay bishops

I don't see why homosexual people want to be part of an denomination where a key part of their life, their self, is deemed morally wrong. It seems odd. You either believe in that set of rules or you don't, if you start cherry picking the aspects you choose to live by and those which you deem antiquated then what's the point in the entire thing? Surely it undermines your belief in them.

Why don't they start their own denomination?

BTW Is Anglicanism a domination or just a group of churches or what?
