Chalk one off the reoffending figures...
People sometimes forget the UK has one permanently armed (on AND off duty) Police force already.

I didn't know the NI police were allowed to be armed while off duty...I've learnt something

Being a cop over in N.I. Is NOT a fun job.
An awful, awful lot of things don't get widely reported in the media.

Re: Armed Robber shot dead by off-duty officer
Yeah, a petrol station, an attempted robbery, a young man shot dead. Brilliant! Bravo! How wonderful! That'll learn um! Etc etc etc.
This is truly a heart warming tale, it almost brings a tear to my eye.

well he did take a knife with him ,and the police must assume he intended to use it ,the public's safety is the main consideration in these situations .

Another one who didn't know that.
So how does that work, when off-duty they carry a gun around everywhere with them as soon as they leave the house?

at home they will have to install a weapon locker which would be hard to break into. Then on the street just like your average american cop thats offduty I would think, just have it in a holster under the armpit?

I'm not entirely sure, I only found out myself a few months ago but as DocDutch says it'll probably be like the American way of doing things.

Re: Armed Robber shot dead by off-duty officer
As far as I know they are allowed a handgun for personal protection (My granda used to work in the prison service and was allowed one) I dont believe they have to be put into a gun cabinet or anything.

They have to take appropriate precautions to ensure the security of the firearm, but yes, if someone comes to your house you don't want it locked away in a gun cabinet.
I had an uncle who had a personal protection weapon and he only carried it when travelling to and from work.
Also if they are going away for a period of time the weapon will be checked into the armory.
