Sadness of friends
I felt really sad when we had friends round for a little party and top of the talk agenda was losing there jobs, some of them are well established jobs and yet most of them have been told they will be out of there job in several months.
Some of them cannot understand what is happening in this country that it has come down to this, three of them are Tory voters and are angry that there leader is allowing this country to be torn apart, while supporting other countries with big bal out.
It spoilt a really good day.

Sorry to hear about your friends' bad news, Arthur - I think, however, your analysis may be a little simplistic (although I understand their anger).

That's how the general public tend to see things though Hugh,in simplistic terms .All we know is that we keep going to work only to either lose that work or have so much of our wage taken from us as to not make the work worth doing ....simples .That is the simple reality of the way this country is going

Re: Sadness of friends
Sadly I see no future in England for my children.
Even if they could obtain University places (and both of them need degrees to pursue their pure scientific interests) there is so little chance of getting a step on the career ladder and paying off a massive debt. Especially when we learn that 2/3 of jobs go to immigrants. They will probably never afford a house of their own and forget a family.
I feel ashamed it is my generation that have raped this country with excess credit and now sit back watching Corrie while students are left to march and protest.
As a previous poster has observed we are still sending money abroad, often to foreign governments who don't need it (China, Pakistan, India) and allowing migrants in to this country when we quite obviously don't need them. No other EU country allows unfettered immigration and benefits.

Re: Sadness of friends
I always find it funny when people blame immigrants for their country's ills and claim they take too many jobs while in the same breath advocate moving abroad. Without even a hint of irony.

Re: Sadness of friends
I am facing an increase from £300 per year travel costs to £3000 if I want to stay with my job as the company I work for are moving. This means that my wife and I have had to face the cost of myself learning to drive and passing my test/ pass plus and now are looking at the cost of running a second car. Either way I am looking at a massive change in financial terms as well as the fact that my wife may lose her job.

Does that figure include jobs that require a degree? If it does, you have a point. However, if it doesn't, then the bulk of those jobs are likely to be jobs requiring low qualifications (cleaners etc).

The problem is that the last several governments (both Tory and Labour) have spent a lot of time telling us that being in debt is good. They've also spent a lot of time trying to drive up house prices, which encourages us to get in more debt (mortgages are a form of debt). TBH, I've never understood why they do this. If you "invest" in a house, then you are unlikely to make any profit when you sell it as it is likely that the house you buy to replace it has risen in cost at around the same rate as the house you sold.

One of the first things this government tightened was the controls on Immigration. We just haven't felt the impact or benefit yet. I work for an organisation that is likely to be affected badly by this.

Ermm. Do you have anything to back that up? Where did you get that number from?
