Very welcome news! let's hope some of this help will filter through to those families around the country where provision is particularly poor or even non-existant.

This will have to be cancelled it'll ruin the nasty Tories reputation. They need to throw money indiscriminately at things.

Re: More support for carers

19 years, 2 disabled children, no respite available as all the money went on admin.

I'm not holding my breath hoping the situation will change.

The Family Fund helped a lot though (Jospeph Rowntree Foundation) with a grant towards a family holiday one year, a grant towards bedding the next, then finally a modest PC for the twins. But as with many parents of disabled children, we didn't find out about it until elegibilty had almost expired.

Yes that's typical of the current system and the link highlights that fact:

Hoping you guys will benefit from all this Taf. All the best!

Neither am I Taf, I have seen these promises before, from successive governments. I am waiting to see what department or service is going to lose out, because of the money being spent elsewhere. There is litle point of more money being allocated, if the fundamental infrastructure is not there to provide the services.

Re: More support for carers

The SEN side of things is basically all to do with schooling... full of beaurocracy, full of promises, but nothing, nada, not a thing, ever comes to fruition.

Year after year after year.

School after school after school.

And I know many parents in this city who see the same thing.

The twins are now "adult" so the chance of any help has passed us by now.

Re: More support for carers

Our local Children's Services were allocated some extra money for SEN apparently, but it is not new money, just old moved money. We asked if that meant that more children will be given improved statements, but were told that that is not what the money is for; they were less forward coming when we asked what the money will be used for.

And yet how much care will they need in the future as adults and whom is going to provide that and at what cost?

Caring doesn't just cease when a child reaches 18.

A prospect that has a huge ominous cloud over our heads.

Re: More support for carers

The move from "Child Services" to "Adult Services" was a hushed one... not a word from the Adult specialists until I chased them up. They had been legally passed on to the Adult Service, but I was told face-to-face that "nothing happens until you query or complain to keep the paperwork down".

Then the waiting starts.... and continues...

Our GP wants to stop my daughter's meds as he cannot prescribe them, only a psychiatrist can... and the psychiatrists are dragging their feet. She has already been told that the meds are "for a life term unless a substitute appears".

My son needs podiatrist input, but they have fallen off the map completely.

Help in college has been so-so, but they seem to be coping with what little help they have managed to grab with both hands. Many in their year have not been so lucky, and a few have dropped-out because of this. The fund for helping with transport is drying-up too... only 50% of costs available this year, going down again next year... that makes in a real hole in the family budget.

OK, they're our kids, our responsibilty, but it riles me when help is offered then withdrawn, promises made only to be broken... and now they seem to be robbing Peter to also deny Paul...

Re: More support for carers

Lets hope that this is all true as i have a 7 year old AUTISTIC son with severe global learning difficulties and having to try and cope is really strenious as my partner is pregnant and he seems to have a obsession with babies. So this will be good news as hopefully we may be able to get away or get a little bit of respite care for our son as trying to get away is like trying to plan a war.

I have got to say that if it was not due to the consultant we would have not heard about the NATIONAL AUTISTIC SOCIETY - EARLYBIRD project that is actually based in BARNSLEY. This project is all about trying to get parents trying and also stratagies to cope with what the different spectrums of the autistic spectrum.

So let hope that all this is true and worked out correctly ( only time will tell )
