UK will lose fewer public sector jobs, says OBR

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-11860585

Quote:
The independent Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) says public sector job losses will not be as high as previously thought.
The OBR now expects 330,000 public sector workers to lose their jobs over the next four years, far fewer than the 490,000 it forecast in its June report.
At least some better news for some..

Re: UK will lose fewer public sector jobs, says OBR

I thought the plan was to reduce the size of the public sector and allow the private sector to grow. Does the Government not trust the private sector?

And what's happened to the size of structural deficit?

They want to win the next election. Trying to wean the country off its' addiction to public services and welfare while doing so means it'll take a lot of time.

Wouldn't doing it slowly leave a bigger bill for our children?

Yes, but they can't vote yet so it's not such a problem. Taking services from voters to spare the bill going to non-voters is politically a no-brainer

Re: UK will lose fewer public sector jobs, says OBR

how do you wean people of welfare by removing employment?

the uk has a bleak future because of now globalised markets, I spoken to a friend in eastern europe yesterday and he was telling me the average wage there is approx 200-250 euros month. In terms of anything that can be done at any location the uk cant compete and as such the private sector will never be able to grow enough to handle the public sector loss of jobs, this is probably why wasteful jobs were created. The sort of jobs that will stay here such as teaching and been a solicitior are not going to provide mass employment, they are specific skilled jobs.

In regards to the NHS I think it should be scrapped, ignition may be shocked to read me saying this, but I would either completely scrap the nhs and then pay the bills for low income people to use private health, or keep the nhs only for 999 services and anything else is privatised. The quality of nhs is so low now we may as well save some money. Of course doing this would skyrocket unemployment, thats probably the prime reason no government would dare do it. The problem with shrinking public services is it may help the ever shrinking workforce but everyone else is worse off.

Try telling that to the nurses who are being downgraded along with pay after 25 years of service in the NHS.

Re: UK will lose fewer public sector jobs, says OBR

well maybe the nhs quality of service has always been low, as I havent really needed to use it much until the past few years.

the general impression I get of the nhs is that it first has a big age discrimination, more care for the elderly and children, if of working age its very hard to get admitted. Some on here may have read my eye infection experience (which is still ongoing). the latest debacle in that saga is I got reffered to a hospital 200 miles away and awaiting another refferal now. People who have had surgery sleeping on 4 chairs in corridors, and more.
