Re: National Campaign Against 'Broadband Boxes'
I've heard the same happening before.
If they don't want cabs, send them over here.
Then when the same NIMBYs are bitching about their slow broadband we can all point and laugh.

This one has invoked the "won't somebody think of the kids" clause.
I do have one query with the one I linked to though. He claims that where they have placed the box, it blocks his view of the pavement when he drives out of his drive. Fair enough. Are most BT boxes around 3-4 foot tall though? I could certainly see over the VM boxes around here while sitting in a car. Of course, if he drove a 911 or other sports car, he'd have a point.
Seems to me that this woman is a typical Resident's Associate busybody though. Our local residents association spends most of it's time complaining that the council does nothing to maintain the flowerbeds around the area, which prompts the council to maintain them for about 2 weeks.
That's not to say the RA haven't helped in the area. They managed to get an extension to the secure unit at Bethlem Royal Hospital stopped citing major concerns over security at the site (someone escapes at least 6 times a year).

The Italian-named bloke sounds like a proper NIMBY. Where does he drive where there aren't hazards where you should peep-and-creep? What a lame excuse.
I've emailed this Vanessa woman just to reiterate how ironic her email address is and enquire as to whether she's got any idea why BT are installing these new cabinets. I can pre-empt the response, if I get one!

The Fibre cabinets are quite a bit bigger. We've got a few around here, and I can sort of understand where someone is coming from.
Small child + taller cabinet = possible issue
EDIT: found a picture of one of the new BT ones from here

Re: National Campaign Against 'Broadband Boxes'
Hardly a surprise our streets look like complete and utter crap, whats wrong with a little consultation with those its going to affect?
If they put something like that outside my house, i'd be more than a little tempted to introduce it to mr lumphammer..

He would have had trouble parking his ice cream van had that box been put there.

There is another way of looking at it. If a service provider wanted to locate a box outside your house, you could always negotiate that you got free services for the life!

You know as well as I do how big the Virgin Mux cabinets are. They're a similar size to these new BT cabinets, if anything maybe larger so I'm far from convinced of these huge issues. The BT cabinets are certainly not the first time something of this size has been in the streets and I can't remember Virgin's cabinets being implicated in any deaths.

Though aren't there likely to be more of the big BT ones than the Virgin ones, as the BT ones where I am seem to be springing up next to every existing cabinet
I only know of one Virgin cabinet that size around where I live, all the rest of the cabinets are the small ones

Re: National Campaign Against 'Broadband Boxes'
There are three boxes on the corner across the road from me: 2 large ones, one I know is phones 'cos the low life round here keep prising open the doors and mucking with the wires. plus one of the smaller ones. Fortunatly they're all against a high wall with a fence on top so don't impose on the street.
I think the issue here is when there are no walls or fences as is common on new estates and the box stands up proud on the verge, not too bad with a small one but if it's one of the biggies....
