Yep. As with Christianity, it depends how much they actually practice the religion.

I suspect some Christians would get offended if Muslims organised a mass Bible bonfire.

While I'm sure some people might be offended by the intent, the Bible would still exist.
I just don't understand how a religion that proscribes idolatry can be offended by the symbolic burning of a book?

I wasn't answering you in regard to what you said. I just quoted you for the bit about being offended or not.

Re: Church Pastor to burn Quran on 9/11
A lot of Muslims will be offended..They are all taught that the words of Mohammed are sacred and that includes every copy of his words. The fact that every copy is given pride of place on the highest shelf, higher than anyone standing up in a Muslims home should indicate how seriously they treat copies of their Holy Book.
What this man is doing IS an insult to ALL Muslims especially as I suspect that he is merely doing it as a means of elevating 'his' church and congregation as a means of increasing his funding for that church and possibly his own pocket.

Re: Church Pastor to burn Quran on 9/11
I find it curious that while this man gets his (deserved) criticism, ne'er a word gets spoken about the upto of a billion people that will murder, burn and riot because of this. And people say the Koran is sacred like it's an excuse.
It is constantly re-enforced to us that extremist islam is a small minority and we need to show tolerance and turn the other cheek but I think muslims around the world need to appreciate occasionally it had to happen in reverse too.
If there's one thing I find curious about this is that by the time the story broke in the UK yesterday morning, there was already video of reactions from Afghanistan. Afghanistan is mostly destitute farmers with barely any working electricity. Yet they find out before us? Word travels fast in certain circles.

Re: Church Pastor to burn Quran on 9/11
That would be the news reporters telling them about it, and filming their reaction.....

Re: Church Pastor to burn Quran on 9/11
The other thing is that will cultures and religions we are more 'comfortable' with we can correct discern the difference between one group and another. If this were a Muslim group burning copies of the bible then the story would have been reported as 'Muslims burning bible', since it's a Christian group the reporters are correctly drawing the distinction between this nutter and the rest of the religion.

The story didn't break yesterday morning ... BBC news was running it on Tuesday evening.
Besides, as Foreverwar pointed out, if a journalist goes out to get 'reaction' to a particular story, it is standard procedure to explain the story to your talking head first, then switch the camera on and collect their rage.

Having engaged in quite a few discussions over this with many friends over the past couple of days, most muslims I know are of the opionion that the best thing we as muslims can do is ignore this.
Just one point - we believe the Koran to be the word of God, revealed to Muhammed (as opposed to the word of Muhammed).

I would be very suprised to find a lot of moderate muslims who believe that Pastor Jones is representative of the Christians message.

He is a non entity preaching to a very small group of other non entitys and being honest i think rather then get offended the vast majority of moderate islam is likely to do what the rest of us will do and just pity such a poor ignorant moron who clearly has nothing of any real value in his life.

I imagine a lot of moderate Muslims would be offended. It's more reason why this is pathetic. They are millions of decent Muslims who this guy and his supporters simply want to insult. Nasty, Nasty people.

Re: Church Pastor to burn Quran on 9/11
Sorry not read the whole thread. But why can't they use their own common sense and see that the person doing this is just a small time nutcase? Instead of the voice of a an entire country/nation which it obviously it ain't. Who's more petty, the person burning the books or those burning the US flag?
To me it seems like any excuse for these people to go on the rampage. And to me it really shows how bad these people really are.

I hope you are right..I really do but having seen what the really committed can do among the truly radical when they feel offended I'm very concerned.

Oh please. You say why can't they see it's simply a single nutcase and then you refer to 'these people' without a hint of irony.
