Possibly (probably) drunk in charge of a vehicle. Pretty much dealt with exactly the same as drink driving.
Again I'm not condoning his actions but the victim didn't help herself at all by refusing to provide breath samples, attempting to escape etc.
As I said earlier if he hadn't thrown her into the cell cutting her head I doubt this would ever have seen the inside of a court room.

A slightly different take on things from someone on the frontline.

The victim said on sky news that she was sleeping in her car because her car broke down, she said nothing about being drunk :/.

Re: Wiltshire policeman faces sack and jail for cell attack on woman
The judge did not suggest that the woman was acting violently, or resisting arrest physically either. I hadn't really read much details about the case until today - but have seen the video. I read the woman in question is 56! To throw a woman like he did (at the point he threw her in the cell she didn't look threatening) and a 56 year old woman at that is bang out of order. Personally I'm glad he got done for it.

I thought that she refused to provide a sample?

Re: Wiltshire policeman faces sack and jail for cell attack on woman
I believe the Police said she refused to give one but she said she was ever asked for one.

I agree. Nothing gives an officer the legal right to abuse a prisoner. If the same event happened where only the gender of the detainee was altered it still might have been reported to the media. I wonder how often something like that happens in a cell without CCTV, in a police station where the officers socialize with each other off hours. We'll never know.
My comment was aimed at a more generic quality of our culture that condones male on male violence relative to male on female violence. Which I think is a fair observation. It is also disgusting to me.
However, I think it's a fair assumption to make that difficult detainees are usually treated with reasonable force. Usually.

This happened after she had refused to provide a sample at the roadside, was subsequently arrested and again refused at the station.

Re: Wiltshire policeman faces sack and jail for cell attack on woman
To be honest Derek, this is one of the few occasions where I find myself disagreeing with Gadget. He makes a few good points, such as the test with 3 guys screaming at you point-blank but this was a very different situation. One slightly-built middle-aged woman, no matter how annoying is just not in the same league and the officer showed an appalling lack of restraint and judgement in this case. For whatever reason, he blew it. I don't think he should have been imprisoned but he was without doubt in the wrong.
