Re: Wiltshire policeman faces sack for cell attack on woman
Yes I do believe the police don't cover up crimes.
I suppose you know exactly the policies and procedures in place for allegations of criminality to be investigated?

Re: Wiltshire policeman faces sack for cell attack on woman
No, I know that power corrupts. I also know that police have covered up events when it suits them.
That is not unusual for most public bodies. I am not naive enough to believe otherwise.

Care to provide examples? Preferably from the last few years.

Derek with the usage of CCTV in police stations surely such cases have been reduced..and are police actually aware of the cameras?Does it affect behaviour at all?

Yes the cameras are very prominent.
In at least one police office complaints of assault went down when the clients realized they were on camera and couldn't make things up. It did take a few of them being done for making malicious complaints before it dropped though
As for behaviour, well not really. Force still has to be used, it looks horrendous on camera and out of context I've probably done things that look just as bad, if not worse than was seen in this footage.
It's one of those things, cameras are everywhere (including body mounted ones) and you forget they are there and just get on with the job regardless.

Re: Wiltshire policeman faces sack for cell attack on woman
Why examples from just the last few years? Police suddenly have become whiter than white?
And because they are not caught, does not prove nothing happens. That is like saying, no crimes have occurred that are not caught.

above is quick check..I'm surprised anyone thinks all police are pure as the driven snow. If you need evidence, just look at human nature, not all have same moral code.

Re: Wiltshire policeman faces sack for cell attack on woman
So what do you think came over this man?Why throw away his career like this? Did he think he was using the correct level of force?
I'm also wondering why she didn't want to give a sample?Surely it would have sorted any issue of her not being drunk straight away?

Just keeping it recent before you dredge up examples from the 60's or 70's where things have changed hugely.

Re: Wiltshire policeman faces sack for cell attack on woman
lol..yes, you are right, thinking that a police officer could commit a crime is exactly like the royal family possibly being baby eating space lizards.
I like your argument

Probably because she was drunk and thought being obstructive and argumentative would make things go away. That would be my first guess.
Anyway I think he has just lost the plot. There are rumblings on police blogs about more footage kicking about showing her trying to escape custody and assault cops prior to this bit.
I think the Sgt. just lost it and decided to put her in a cell.
If he had grabbed her arm with another cop and pulled her into a cell then nothing would have been said, him using force himself makes it look worse and the final throwing into the cell is a big no-no.

Re: Wiltshire policeman faces sack for cell attack on woman
Well Derek I wouldn't want to do your job under the circumstances that you have to face every day you are on duty..Damned if you do,damned if you don't and you can never win with some members of the public.
Mind when I find people all too ready to jump all over the police I do wonder where they are coming from and what their motives are?

Re: Wiltshire policeman faces sack for cell attack on woman
I don't think it is jumping on police, but questioning. They hold police to a higher standard than some, and to a similar standard than others.
When you have power or authority, you need to be careful how you use it, or abuse it. My remarks are that abuse of power happens. To presume otherwise takes more faith in the world then I'm willing to concede.

It is the likes of this guy who give the police a bad name and then people associate his actions with other police which is out of order.
He may be a bad apple but soon he will be gone.

Well you could say that about a lot of public servants. The police only have the powers that they have because we need them to have those powers. They don't just assume them with no recourse to anyone else.Frankly the amount of scrutiny they already receive seems more than enough for me and perfectly adequate.
They don't need constant armchair critics second guessing them. They also don't need the constant bashing they get from the media over cases like the Moat case when it was the media at fault for the constant over the shoulder watch mounted through helicopters and constant interviews demanded from the police over every aspect.
Now of course the whole NOTW phone tapping issue is kicking off again and the police will be getting it in the neck when probably the orders to desist probably came from a much, much higher level..
