Re: Safety Fears Stops Police Pursuit
I'm a biker even so I have absolutely no sympathy for him.. It's one of the reasons as to why I'm not a MAG (motorcycle ation group) supporter as they have a history of campaining trying to make helmets optional..

Well he's one to chalk off the re-offending figures.

There's only one bike that should have an optional helmet
(or indeed, compulsory no helmet) and that's the BMW C1 - it's an enclosed bike with seatbelt. Studies have shown that any rider involved in an accident while riding a C1 with a helmet on is extremely likely to sustain neck injuries as a result of the helmet striking the frame and that a rider without a helmet is much safer since the frame provides better protection than a helmet.

When I used to ride motorbikes I only felt safe with my helmet and bike gear on and cannot abide to see riders in nylon tracksuits, shirt and shorts or with no gloves or boots.
I once rode 50 yards and skidded on gravel and still have the gravel imprint to show on my palm and wrist were I had to dig them out.
With this guy as others have said the Darwin effect has come into play and he is no great loss.

I know there was the big court case, but I believe the UK goverment still refused to rescind the UK helmet law for the C1 in the UK. Even though a judge ruled one way it would take a change in the law itself.. Or at very least for it to go through the lawlords..
Inthe end it had dismal sales in 2002 and was eventually withdrawn after only 3 years production so the helmet point with less than 15,000 sold world wide is very mute..

I have only ever seen one of these on the road and that was in Edinburgh parked outside of a house.

Re: Safety Fears Stops Police Pursuit
My best friend was killed on his bike aged just 20. He was wearing a helmet at the time but it'd been badly damaged in a previous accident and DIY 'repaired'. He died of severe head/brain injuries. Ironically and very tragically, he had a brand new Griffin helmet which had been beautifully custom painted but didn't want to get it damaged so used to wear the old helmet most of the time. I gave up biking for good that year and would strongly advise anyone riding motorbikes to wear as good a helmet as they can afford.

Re: Safety Fears Stops Police Pursuit
Having a unknown biker die in my arms back in 2000 just outside of my house made me a staunch supporter of helmets.. Granted the biker had a helmet on when they hit a cast iron bollard at 60+ which delaminated the helmet but an accident at a lot slower speed would have been also been fatal without a helmet..
That day I'll remember for the rest of my life

I remember years ago (I was only a young kid), my Aunt (who was Sister of Intensive Care at the time) took me in to work. She showed me what I can only describe as a complete wreck of a man who had apparently had most of his bones broken in a motorbike accident. It gave me nightmares, but had (what I assume was) the intended effect. I've never ridden a Motorcycle.
And yes, I know that they can be perfectly safe given a good rider. I still would not ride one though.
