Re: BP Macondo Oil Leak: Gulf of Mexico, US

From some sources this is the worst oil spill/leakage since the Kuwaiti oil fields were set ablaze.
Have BP not learned anything from previous disasters!

Looks like the weather is hampering efforts to get this under control.

200 Thousand gallons a day is an enormous amount, the sooner they get this under control the better

What BP said

Quote:
BP deemed giant spill unlikely
BP suggested in a 2009 exploration plan and environmental impact analysis for the well that an accident leading to a giant crude oil spill — and serious damage to beaches, fish and mammals — was unlikely, or virtually impossible.

Like I said, that is the philosophy of "risk management".

That will do....I guess.

Not sure whether this was the main BP spill thread or not, anyway :

http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/201...n_the_oil.html

Pretty depressing. I'm old enough to remember the footage of wildlife being killed by the Amoco Cadiz disaster and this brings it all back, I guess it's going to get much worse.

Gosh, I'm old enough to remember the Torry Canyon

There's still tar on the Westcountry beaches from that disaster.

Re: BP Macondo Oil Leak: Gulf of Mexico, US

Of course the American's are making all sorts of demands regarding BP's liability for all of this but I don't recall them acting in quite the same manner when it came to this major disaster involving a US firm's operations on foreign soil:

Re: BP Macondo Oil Leak: Gulf of Mexico, US

and now in the American B movie tradition

Nuclear Option on Gulf Oil Spill

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/03/us...=&ei=&partner=

The chatter began weeks ago as armchair engineers brainstormed for ways to stop the torrent of oil spilling into the Gulf of Mexico: What about nuking the well?

Decades ago, the Soviet Union reportedly used nuclear blasts to successfully seal off runaway gas wells, inserting a bomb deep underground and letting its fiery heat melt the surrounding rock to shut off the flow. Why not try it here?

The idea has gained fans with each failed attempt to stem the leak and each new setback — on Wednesday, the latest rescue effort stalled when a wire saw being used to slice through the riser pipe got stuck.

yes nuclear bombs are our friends

tbf, it does state in article
Quote:
The nuclear option was not — and never had been — on the table, federal officials said.
“It’s crazy,” one senior official said.
Government and private nuclear experts agreed that using a nuclear bomb would be not only risky technically, with unknown and possibly disastrous consequences from radiation, but also unwise geopolitically — it would violate arms treaties that the United States has signed and championed over the decades

Re: BP Macondo Oil Leak: Gulf of Mexico, US

It appears that anti-British sentiment may be escalating in the US as BP suddenly starts to be known as British Petroleum despite being c. 40% owned by US shareholders who'll be pretty hacked off about it all I'm sure.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/10281079.stm

The US does like to have its cake and eat it doesn't it. Contrast current US government sentiment and demands with the way they've handled the Bhopal disaster which killed thousands of people and is still doing so:

Re: BP Macondo Oil Leak: Gulf of Mexico, US

I actually think the yanks are taking the michael with this whole episode. After all it was an American company which built the rig, it was owned and run by an American company (Transocean). The rigs safety valve (blowout preventor) had previous `issues`.
Another of them fine American oil and gas services companies Haliburton (major shareholder one Donald Rumsfeld) had just finished doing cement work on the rig, which is poured in to keep out gas and apparently the blowout preventer had been modified in "unexpected ways"

Because it`s all gone wrong in a bad way it`s BP`s fault and only BP`s fault because they leased the rig!

Something smells wrong and it aint all the dead fish being washed up on the beaches...

Re: BP Macondo Oil Leak: Gulf of Mexico, US

Lord Tebbit nailed it just right earlier on BBC News. Its a pity his comments aren't on the website. He basically said that Obama should grow up.

Obama certainly lacks class and it's obvious what his game plan is. He's trying to run BP and Hayward into the ground to try and gain some kind of ratings from ****ed off Americans. In the absence of any decent leadership and with his ratings stymied, I think he if he thinks if he says the right things.

And while he's looking for the right "arse to kick", he could try looking at Warren Anderson (Bhopal disaster CEO). The Americans have repeatedly denied extradition attempts. So not only is he classless, he's a hypocrite.

The UK has no love of oil companies but even the British public now are turning on Obama for his comments. And rightly so.
