ITV Video Game Debate
Anyone else think this was a load of rubbish? The Alan Titchmarsh Show debating video games and their effects on children...

Re: ITV Video Game Debate
These things are usual rubbish because the people debating on the negative side have probably rarely play games have appointed themselves experts on their damage to society. The fact these people brought up erroneous statements against games is a testament to that.
All new mediums seem to suffer from accusations of causing a moral decay. These people will join the ranks of Mary Whitehouse.

Re: ITV Video Game Debate
As with all things, ignorance breeds contempt.... Saying that, some of the news stories of pre-teenage kids in America punching their mates in the face and shouting "Judgment of Light" after too much PvP in WoW makes me laugh my ass off.

Re: ITV Video Game Debate
They seem to have found an especially idiotic and biased audience as well.

Most likely it's an older audience, of people in their 40's and over.... Saying that, I'm 39 this year and still enjoying WoW.

Re: ITV Video Game Debate
If it's not games, it's films, or books - perhaps it's the people involved, not the medium?

Re: ITV Video Game Debate
Interesting development
Julie Peasgood who was "categorically against violence for entertainment" in that ITV farce did some voice acting in survival horror title Martian Gothic:Unification
So she's "categorically against violence for entertainment" except when it pays

Re: ITV Video Game Debate
I didnt watch this one but most of these kind of things I've seen in the past have been nothing but one sided and that side is also very poorly informed and unwilling to even try and see things from the other side.
In my opinion some people are just looking for things to blame for the state of society today and unfourtunatly games tend's to take alot of the flack. Luckily most people like myslef tend to completely ignore it and decide for themselves.

Re: ITV Video Game Debate
I am always more worried by the people that read all this disturbing stuff into things then i am the stuff in question most of the time. So many times i have heard some expert describe how very disturbing stuff is present in something i have read, played or seen and until i heard the expert i never saw any of that into it. I thik disturbed minds see disturbing things in everything and they should all go along get some therapy and leave the things for those of us who don't see weird and disturbing things in all things.
That said i have seen numerous times outside the secondary school across the way references to GTA when a group are giving some kid a hiding but i think thats more laziness on their part then anything else.

Re: ITV Video Game Debate
Rock and Roll, Heavy Metal, Video nasties, Video Games.. Just the latest in a long line of something for those who know nothing about the topic to shout out how disgusting it all is to a baying audience of morons.

Re: ITV Video Game Debate
This is what I picked up from watching that clip:
I agree with everything the Video Game Guy (don't know his name) said, yes video games do have strict certificates for a very good reason. However there are still parents out there that will buy these games that are rated 18 for their 10 year old kids and its just wrong. How else can the retailers stop kids of a young age buying these games?

Re: ITV Video Game Debate
It would be easy to ignore Horace if it wasn't for the puddle deep conviction of so many of our politician's who might feel this is a good way to get some extra votes. I have watched so called bad films since i was a kid played most of the violent games that have come out since i left the army and i don't go about harming people or doing anti social stuff and the reason is simple because they don't have any effect unless you allow it too and want an excuse for crappy behaviour.

Re: ITV Video Game Debate
If it was Jeremy Paxman on Newsnight with Robin Duval(BBFC) a behavioural psychologist and someone reasonably high up in the home office then I'd understand the concern. As it was, since it was a has-been gardener, some crazy woman and an ex-editor of the Sun with an audience of half-cut bingo players then I don't rate the chances of any action been taken. As was pointed out to the uninformed host; the BBFC already classifies games.
