I can only go on what I saw with my own eyes - the EDL/WDL were very intimidating towards everyone, nazi salutes, "come and have a go then" type threats etc.
The UAF, although loud and forceful, were not as threatening.

If they cannot be grownup and protest peaceful then i feel they should both be restricted until such time as they can protest without members of the police being injured and places turned into a battle ground by some of there supporters

Wonder how much these idiots cost the tax payer.
|
And this is the level of excuses being used, She even had the gall to use the phrase guaranteed to light a sign above her head:
Quote:
EDL member Lucy Bethell, 23 and from Manchester, said: "I've come to this great city of Leicester to protest against Islamic extremism.
'Defending Englishness'
"I am not a racist. I have Muslim and black friends. There is a big difference between racism and protesting against Islamic extremism. I joined the EDL because it made no sense that people defending Englishness were labelled as troublemakers."
|
She spouts on about " Islamic extremism," yet presumably fails to recognise the irony.

I think it may be their (re-)definition of "Englishness" that is the ironic part.
To me, the best part of being British (you may, if you wish, cling to the sub-division of "English"), is our ability to believe in, and support, the rule of law, religious tolerance, freedom of speech and a belief in fair play.

London, the most expensive place to live in the UK, is conspicuous by it's absence.

Anyhoo, back to the EDL.
|
Apart from posting the same thing twice, that link just shows one should be careful with stats. The link you provided states cost of living for expats (journalists in partcular). I would imagine the reason that Luanda and Ndjameana are high on the list is not because property is expensive, but rather because the casualty rate (and therefore cost of insurance/security) is high.
No wonder London is not on the list...

Seeing that the irony was apparently missed by more than one member: I think Flyboy meant that the EDL themselves are extremists.

Even the dictionary doesn't really give a good definition of the word and it's meaning of 'extremist'
so it's left to ones own definition and meaning really.
if you were to say 'islam extremist' and 'EDL extremist' you'd have 2 different ideas probably.

Re: Weekend fun with the EDL and chums
I can't speak for Ndjameana, but Luanda must be on the list because Angola has one of, if not the fasting growing economies in the world. The whole country is in the midst of major development and Luanda plans become a "megacity", akin to Toyko etc.
And as i recall from the African Nations Cup held in Angola this year (all newly built stadiums i believe), many British journalists weren't able to attend because hotel rooms, travel etc were too expensive. Nothing to do with "casualty rate", and if that were part of the criteria for this list, Luanda would be nowhere near the top.
I find city and country development very interesting, so i can't help but post some photos. This is Luanda:
I'm certain most people only think of African cities as slums and derelict buildings.

Interesting. However, (having done some digging) the Mercer index, if not flawed is rather skewed in that it looks at the cost of living for expats. For accommodation (which represents the biggest chunk of cost of living) it looks at 'a luxury two bed roomed unfurnished apartment', which apparently costs ~$4500 per month in Luanda. Possibly because there's not that many around. And translating everything back to dollars it's also quite sensitive to fluctuations in exchange rates.
Obviously, it also rather depends on where you go for your coffee. Starbucks of the Raffles.

The survey covers 214 cities across five continents and measures the comparative cost of over 200 items in each location, including housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment. New York is used as the base city for the index and all cities are compared against New York. The cost of housing – often the biggest expense for expats - plays an important part in determining where cities are ranked.
