Though he might be right, isn't this the guy he wants to burn a load of oil to let people get to the edge of space for a few seconds? And if he grounded his aircraft he could make a useful contribution

Re: Branson warns of oil crunch within five years.

Can't possibly be true, it will last forever! (at least that's what most believe). Mind you even the books I've read on the subject give it longer than 5 years even though we have probably reached the point of peak oil production.

Re: Branson warns of oil crunch within five years.

I think most people realise oil is on the way out as an energy source but i do think 5 years till a crisis is a little premature. I think we have maybe 15-20 years before a crisis hits and that is plenty of time to avoid much of the impact if as he does rightly say the time till then is used properly. We desperately do need to come up with a non oil based longterm strategy for energy and i can see it becoming more and more of a public issue before much longer.

I do think there is irony in him of all people banging on about this and think it would have been much better coming from someone that doesn't have large transportation connections or plans to take tourists into space .

1. A ride into space with Branson will generate about 25% of the CO2 per passenger as a flight from London to New York.

2. The global cement manufacturing industry generates more CO2 than the global airline industry.

3. Everyone's personal and business activities create CO2, including yours. By that measure, perhaps you should reserve comments yourself?

Re: Branson warns of oil crunch within five years.

I can tell you, Branson is talking a load of *****, l know several people that work in the industry, and one of them travels all over the world working for a major oil company, and he told me that oil won't run out for years, in fact he said that the oil will still be going strong when his children get old enough to have grandchildren.

He is scaremonering, what happens is that when an oil field is found, they keep going for more. and he should know.

Re: Branson warns of oil crunch within five years.

Wasn't it Dubai that announced "a new huge oilfield find" just a couple of days ago?

Or shall I be sceptical and think it was a ploy to pacify their creditors?

There's loads of Oil in the Falklands, that's why Maggie took it back off the Argies when they invaded back in 1982. After all what would we want with a bit of rock thousands of miles away in the Atlantic??

Sorry Arthur, but I know IT specialists working in the oil industry, travelling all over the world. Doesn't make them any more experts on the subject than you or I.

If you read the report, its much to do with the cost of oil in the future, not so much about oil running out.

Read the report, you may find it interesting.

Until Israel gets itchy feet I wouldn't be too concerned about oil supplies..for a little while anyway.

Maybe that explains why I don't go away for a holiday anymore

Who knows?

At the end of the day every time each of us use some oil, either directly or indirectly, it's gone, it's never coming back

I think it is in Governments interests to make the population think there is plenty left so that they can enrich themselves and not meddle and try to solve the problem
