Like all forces, South Yorkshire has an non-emergency number - 0114 2202020 - for calls which fall outside this definition of seriousness.

A guy dialled 999 and requested paramedics because the smell from his feet was making him nausious.

I'm not sure these people were born with any sense.

Re: Yet another 999 Idiot
While i am loathe to some of the silly fines we now have in the UK i do think anyone that wastes the time of 999 should get fined as the time idiots take up could and maybe has cost someone dear.

Agreed but no need to waste a Courts time issuing a fine simply Invoice them for the cost of the resources they wasted.

Re: Yet another 999 Idiot
I generally just call the local police service centre (put through there from the police station) and I let them decide if they want to treat it as an emergency. The two occasions they have upgraded the call - were someone on the roof of the church (recently had lead stripped) and a small fire in a woodland - so they called the fire brigade).
The trouble is that most people think the 999 call number is freephone assistance. It's not there to tell you how to get home when you missed the last bus, or to chastise your children to eat their greens.
I agree - the police should send a bill similar to the fire brigade for false calls.

Re: Yet another 999 Idiot
I disagree about fining these people - if they're "intellectually challenged" enough to dial 999 because there's a spider in the bath or something, are they going learn a lesson from being fined?

Re: Yet another 999 Idiot
Easy solution.
Make 999 calls about £20 a shot instead of being free. At a stroke that'll cut down on the timewasters and if you really need the Ambulance/Fire Brigade/Police you won't care what it costs.
